    Washingtonians

I have a French Black Copper Maran for rooster I am trying to find a home for. I have no idea what line, but he is purebred, from a local breeder, and has feathered feet. He is a beautiful boy, just beginning to crow - which is why I need to get rid of him (no roosters in my neighborhood) He...

No eggs from our 20 week pullets and very anxious please help

My hens began laying at anywhere between 24 - 44 weeks. I know it's hard to be patient, but the eggs WILL come (and they will be very worth it when they do!)

Day 30, and both eggs hatched beautiful baby duckies! Only 1 is in the pic, but they're both there! The wax worked!

    First time hatcher - questions!

This is my first time hatching eggs - we have duck eggs under a broody hen. It is day 21. We candled the eggs tonight and they were definitely moving around, but one of them seemed to have an air sac larger than the other - taking up about 1/3 of the egg. It is one that we discovered a...

Free range or keep in coop until first egg?

It also worked for ours to let them range all over but just put a fake egg in. Every single one of them knew to begin laying there, and we've never had a problem.

Day 18 duck egg - found slight crack - UPDATE!! Healthy ducklings!!

It was in the air sac, but now it seems like it also comes down the side pretty far. it is still just a hairline crack though. We went ahead and put beeswax on it - hopefully mamma hen won't try to pick it off and crack it even more I really hope it makes it!

Day 18 duck egg - found slight crack - UPDATE!! Healthy ducklings!!

Ack! When I went to candle my eggs, I noticed a hairline crack on of of them. It is still alive - I saw it moving around in there - but now I am worried whether or not it can still make it. I have heard of other people putting wax, glue, or tape on - however those instances all seem to be...

    Is this a blood ring?

Thank you, everyone, you were right! I recandled tonight and both eggs looked similar, but in one I saw the embryo moving around inside! Amazing!!!

    Is this a blood ring?

Yay! That is very good news! This is my first hatch, and out of 4 eggs, two went bad, and then the two left looked like this tonight. I was beginning to think I lost them all! I do wonder though - I don't know how well you can tell in the picture - but I couldn't see a clear embryo in the...

    Is this a blood ring?

I know it's not the best picture. There are some veins around the circle, but you can't seem them in the pic. This is the 11th day of setting on duck eggs, although they've seemed a few days behind in the candling. Last night they looked like day 7's.

Hen sat in laying box - but no egg?

My speckled sussex was in the laying box this morning for a good half hour or so at least. But when I went to gather the eggs, there wasn't one from her! (I only have 7 chicks laying now, all different breeds and I can tell their eggs apart). This seems really strange to me! Should I be...

Broody hen doesn't always sit on all eggs - normal?

I was wondering about that too, but then my husband asked "then why was she sitting on plastic eggs (that we keep in their laying boxes) before we gave her the fertile eggs?" (we don't have a rooster, so when she went broody we got some fertilized duck eggs.)

Broody hen doesn't always sit on all eggs - normal?

My first experience with a broody hen. She is sitting on duck eggs right now - this is her 3rd day. Sometimes when I check on her, she will have an egg off to the side - other times she's sitting on all of them. Should I be concerned, or is this normal behavior? I am worried about the egg...

Chicks and a broody hen - Questions

I have searched the message boards, but can't seem to find answers to the questions I have. I have 5 baby chicks, ranging from 3 weeks to 5 days old. I also have a BO that started going broody within the past couple days. Can I put all the chicks under her? Right now we tried putting the...

    Sick chick

I've never heard of grapefruit seed extract - is it something you can just get at the store, or do you have to special order it? One thing I've noticed too, is that she almost never opens her eyes. And when I do see her do it, she just opens them a little slit. I don't know if it's just...
