What an interesting post! We have considered getting a few ducks this spring, and this post just made up my mind. My daughter is hoping ducks are as friendly as her black cochin bantam, who follows her around like a little puppy dog. Sounds like ducks can make great pets!!!
Hi OldMoRoo! I'm also pretty new to the forum (although I have lurked a lot) and I'm also from Mo! We're in Blackwater - midwa between KC and Columbia.
Are you sure they aren't laying in a secret spot? My chickens tend to get very creative with where they lay their eggs! I don't know much about the Salmon Faverolles, though. Good luck!
I have ordered twice from McMurray. The first time my bonus was a Arancana rooster, the second it was a Speckled Sussex rooster. It is so much fun to try to figure out what the bonus chick is!
I have found my hens most often go broody in the spring and into summer months. Last year we had a couple of our Buff Rocks go broody in the springtime and they were stubborn as you can imagine, and we had a hard time breaking them. One just wouldn't cooperate so we let her brood. Last year...
It's that awesome time of year! Christmas? nope. Birthday? nope. It's the time of year with the hatchery catalogs show up in your mailbox. This year, we are going to stray from our usual order of rocks and RIRs, so I would love to hear what everyone's favorite breed is for eggs - we like...
We would put out sand (play sand from the sandbox) when the chicks were old enough to start getting occasional treats. Once we move our chicks into the coop, we would offer regular grit. I would say you don't have to offer any form of grit until you start offering treats, or until they're...
Great list! My chickens go berserk over bread. I don't know what they like better, eating it, or just running around with it showing it off to the other chickens and getting chased!
I have heard that fruit is a big NO NO because it can cause egg production to decrease or stop if they eat a...
Thanks for the reply! The bone does not seem to be shattered, we took a look at it because we noticed he could not fly up to the roost where he ususally sleeps. We lifted the wing and can see a big bump where it must be broken, but he didn't even sqwak when we were messing with the wing, he...
This weekend, one of our cows stepped on one of our bantams! He definitely has a broken wing, but is otherwise moving about ok and eating. I'm sure he's feeling rather rotten, should I put him down? I'm hoping he will heal, and even if he doesn't fly have a decent life (provided he stays...
