I have found 2 tiny eggs in the box. My hens have plenty of water, food and pretty clean living. Their diet consists of layered crumbles, scratch corn, and then every day I give them fresh kale or other garden vegetables ..... they eat very good. I am very confused by this.
One of my hens went broody so I put an egg under her, never expecting it to hatch. Well it did! Cutest little chick! however, I didn't know what to do with the chick so I put it in a box and am feeding and watering it like when we originially received our chicks from the hatchery. Should I...
Thank you for the great info! I always wash my eggs in cool to warm water because I give them to neighbors, etc. But I guess I won't anymore, unless one is dirty. And as for how long an egg stays edible????? Wow! That's good to know.
Thank you so much for your input ...... that is pretty much what I thought was going on. I'll put some thought to it and figure out how I want to handle it. Thanks again!
I have a hen who is 10 months old. She was laying eggs regularly but now she stays in the nesting box all the time. She is eating and comes out at least once a day to scratch around for food but then goes right back to the box. However, there is NO egg. This has been going on for a few weeks...
Thank you for your inputs .... yes, sounds like I need to separate the horny rooster. I have been using red bulbs in the coop since we had such cold weather , however, I didn't realize they help keep the hens from pecking each other so I suppose I should keep using them. Thanks again for your...
I have 2 flocks. One flock has an older rooster and he is ruff but not toooo ruff on his 8 hens. The other rooster is very young and has 3 ladies, two of which are bald because of him grabbing them. I keep putting neosporin on. The baldness, however, is moving even further down by their...
I'm in West Va and we have had an unusual amount of snow and cold this year. My hens don't quite care for it either but they deal with it. When the snow is deep, I dig out little paths for them and they line up, single file, and off they go!
I don't think I could stand to see those videos ... I'm not sure "how" they trimmed the beaks of my chickens but they butchered them, plain and simple!
Thanks for your reply, it's very much appreciated.. I have 11 hens with the 2 roosters. It has been a few weeks since the fight and I think I've got them under control. I have two roosts in the coop and the old rooster sleeps on one with 8 hens, the young rooster sleeps on the other with the 3...
I have two roosters, the more dominant rooster was here before any of my hens and he is a little older. The other rooster, we thought was a buff orpington hen (Goldilocks) turns out she is a he! So the older rooster apparantly attacked Goldilocks during the night or early this morning before...
