I'm usually pretty good at sexing my birds but I'm slightly stumped with these two. The barred rock looks too light to be female but hasn't got much of a comb. It's about 12-14 weeks now. The araucana had no comb to speak off compared to it's two brother. They went and within a week this one had...
This araucana is about 12-14 weeks old and I have no idea what gender it is.
Originally it had two brothers in with it and was very obviously different.
I sold the two roos and within 2 weeks it's comb had turned red and it was starting to look more roo-ish.
I have been told araucanas are hard...
Looking back on my emails to the lady I asked for eggs from her black orp pen- so that must be it!
The roo was black also. Maybe black orps are more common here (New Zealand). I feel like I've seen a few around
Michael- checked the feet and they are grey- same as the legs. Ive never heard of...
I dont think it could be an Australorp, the lady I got the eggs from doesnt own any.
so I guess it must be a rare black orp.
Fingers crossed for the silkies!
Thanks so much for your quick reply!!
This should be a really easy differentiation and a silly question, but I just want to be 100% sure!
The reason this debate is even occurring is because I hatched 3 Orp eggs and 1 Araucana. I couldnt tell them apart at hatch and I didnt know about the comb difference (pea vs single).
I went away...
Hey guys,
So here is an updated photo of my birds. I feel that the 1 pullet and 1 roo was correct.
Just wanted to check again as I am about to sell them off and need to be sure of their genders :
Thanks
I went and bought some Orpington hens today for my rooster (who jumped straight on the back of one- so at least he knows how to do that job), and I showed her a picture of my rooster and she said that there is no way he is pure bred and is likely to have light breed in there somewhere. She told...
He's the only roo I own (I thought he was a hen up until a few weeks ago). He's second in the peaking order to my Wyandotte pullet (who's half his size). Maybe she's keeping him for doing it?
Or he's having gender identity issues? Lol. Well I'm totally fine with that as long as he still realises...
Does anyone know when I should expect him to start crowing. He's 6-7 months old now. He's second on the peaking order. Is there a possibility that he just will never crow? *fingers crossed finger crossed*
Ah so happy about his breed :)
Ah that's perfect. I was hoping for that but I'm really new to this whole world and wondered if I was being a bit bias.
I've decided to put a collar on him and get him some girl of his own (as long as the collar works well). But then I started worrying about his breed.
Gosh if you told me 18...
Just another quick question.
Does anyone know how to tell if they are pure-breed Orpingtons or crosses?
I bought them as crosses but when I asked what they were crossed with I was told they could be pure breed or crossed with a cochin.
Ive looked at a million photos online, and am leaning...
There was no flash on when I took the photo.
I shone the light on them and I didn't 'see' anything. May be just my untrained eyes though.
It's the comb and wattle that is throwing me off. Another chick I have (6weeks different breed) has a bigger and redder comb already.
It seems every time...
