I am an older single mom & still work fulltime. I have a 16 year old son who helps and an 18 year old daughter who likes looking at the chickens but wishes I would get rid of them (yeah, like that would help to keep the house clean!) Here's the big girls' coop - wintertime - looks a whole lot...
I have lost 3 button quail hens to being eggbound. They have the largest egg to bird size and so it is not uncommon. Someone told me their grandfather used to add something to the chickenfeed to make the shells more flexible and pass easier. Anyone heard of such a thing? I give my chickens...
Thank you. I just have mash because at times our locally made crumbles have a lot of crushed particles. I have mixed with warm water and they weren't too excited and preferred to scratch around. I will try adding some other stuff, vegies or yogurt or maybe buttermilk. Thank you all for your...
I have been feeding my hens a variety of foods but have never figured how to make mash. Do you feed it moistened with water? How wet? That is how I have done it to make a soft crumbley texture but they don't eat it.

If she has puncture wounds I would use antibiotics. Clean the wound with warm saline or half peroxide and water. Dry and apply triple antibiotic or neosporin ointment. I have dropper/syringe fed a dog-wounded chicken - water and blue green algae (or some other high energy green food). I...
Ah! The joys of the internet! Hope your chickens bring you much joy and eggs-iting treats An English pun to show we're not particular about spelling here. How do you folks get those waving animated smileys?
I am an RN for a living and a single mom of 16 years. We have a small city lot and love our chickens along with our other pets. I have been an RN for 24 years and before that worked in reforestation in OR, ID, and Alaska. I moved constantly till I had kids and have spent all their years here...
Thanks for all the info. My game hens have been hiding in dark places when free in the yard making me think they may be contemplating a hidey spot for eggs. My MaggiePI (first game hen) used to do that and I wouldn't see her for a while then find her on a pile of eggs. I think I will make...
