We just got her home this evening and found that she had laid the egg in the bis during transport ... It looks more like an ameracuana / Easter egger egg then what we are expecting from a black copper maran.

There was blood being drawn from the new chicken so we pulled her out. I feel like I've read that once they seen blood they will just keep pecking at it and could possibly kill the bird.
We got a new chicken last night and put her in the coop with the other birds. This afternoon my wife went to check for eggs and found the new birds tail pecked clean of feathers. Any idea why the other birds would be doing this?
We have taken the new bird inside to prevent further injuries to...
I have 3 hens (2 golden comets and 1 barred rock) along with a young Ameraucana Rooster that I am looking to give to a good home. The hens are no longer laying, or rarely lay and would prefer they not go to a home where they will be killed.
Is it possible to teach boundaries to a free range flock? My 4 chickens have recently started ranging a bit to far (into my neighbors driveway/land). When I see them over there I go outside and shoo them back onto my land.
We are getting 2 golden comets and 2 Bard Rocks ... I guess I will plan on making it 6' high then. I plan to let them have out of the run and into the yard when we are home on the weekends, but during the week I want to be able to let them out in the Run.
I just purchased a coop yesterday and next weekend I need to get the run made to get ready for the arrival of the birds. My questions is how high do I need to make the fence? I was planning on getting some 8' 4x4's and burying 2 feet of them leaving 6 feet above ground ... does it need to be...
This weekend I am picking up a coop (3.5' x 4') and would like to get 4 chickens for our backyard. I have a question on what breed to get and if it is better to get older chicks (8 weeks) or younger chicks (days old).
There is a woman selling very young buff orpingtons for $2.50. There is...
I would assume the heat/ ventilation is a concern when they are closed in the coop correct? If they are out in the run I would assume they would be fine (given shade and water)
I live in Maine so it get's fairly cold in the winter ... The price is right for this coup, can't really afford a larger one.
Would a coup this size be a problem during the winter?
My wife and I recently purchased a house and would like to have some chickens. We found a coop we liked it is 3.5' by 4' with 1 nesting box. The person selling them said that this size was good for 4 birds. We are looking at getting some Buff Orpington's, I just wanted to make sure that 4...
