They were in the coop, but I have an A-frame style and the roost is low to the floor. I made (obviously) a huge mistake and didn't secure the ramp...it could have walked right up.
I lost two pullets last night. One was completely gone; I only found a bunch of feathers inside the run and then fewer feathers from when she was dragged across the yard and under the fence. The other pullet was lying dead in the run, with part of her stomach eaten. ( I don't think it was a...
I brought six chicks home today and am hoping that one of my hens will adopt them and mother them. Is this realistic? Two hens had no interest when I introduced them in the brooder, but one (a bufff orpington) has been really curious and is sitting near by them. The chicks are under the heat...
I started asking the farmers at my Farmers Market and was able to locate a source for soy-free organic non GMO. Maybe try that and see if you have any luck?
I didn't have a necropsy done, but maybe I will if Arwen doesn't recover. The feed is fresh organic and from a local mill, so I hope that's not the problem. Thanks for your input!
I've had three chickens die of the same symptoms several months apart. First they get lethargic, then they lose their balance and can't stand up, then they just lie down in a corner and a couple of days later die. They've all been different ages when it happens, from about 2 months old to 5...
A friend and I purchased chicks from the same farmer and took them home (separate homes). All of mine are fine; half of hers have died. We have different breeds; all of hers are barred rocks. The first one may have died from over handling, but the remaining ones for sure didn't. She said...
I had to separate an injured chicken recently. Her "sisters" were all very curious about where she was, and one actually flapped/hopped from her own brooder box into the injured chick's box so she could soothe her. They are very protective of the injured one and make sure she's okay.
The worst happened this morning: a raccoon attack while my 9 week old pullets were out free ranging. I was there and intervened, so the raccoon didn't kill Esme (the attacked pullet), but he maimed her eye. I got the other girls back inside (they still sleep in a brooder at night) and rushed...
Thanks for all the information and support! I don't have any photos yet (but she looks like every other black australorp I've ever seen!) She will get plenty of love and care...
Although I'm feeling kind of guilty too...the only reason I got her at all is because one of my "girls" turned out...
