Watch it, those buggers will be back! I lost many to neighbors dogs and it's heartbreaking at my house because they are all family pets with names and personalities.
We solved our issues by installing that electric fence and boy is it fun to watch those dogs now!! Not 1 chicken lost in a year...
Wisconsin is coooold! 5 degrees now with a windchill of -25. 5 more inches of snow overnight. Chickens are locked up today in a heated coop (about 30degrees, they're happy:P) We even pooped out on our snowmobile ride today. Couch sounds great during this crazy-buisy time. Happy Holidays!!
Yes! I have a standard cochin and a bantam silky and they stick very close together. One day I picked up the cochin and the silky was underneath. They were both broody so this went on for quite a while. Now at night they roost together many times the silky is under the cochins wing. These gals...
Hopefully you'll be as lucky as we are:) Our big boy cochin is 6 mo and not yet crowing. Many of mine started showing signs of trying in the brooder at abt 4-6 weeks of age. These were mostly bantams. I'm wondering if the standard may take longer to mature.
I've ordered from other hatcheries and it seems like the 50/50 rule holds up. Don't be afraid of the silkies!!! We have them in WI and they are very hardy, affectionate, and make great moms in hatching their own eggs and other eggs. Some just need a little more protection from preditors due to...
I had 5 roosters from one batch and they all got along great. It was the constant, non-stop, one right after the other, all day long crowing. I'd swear they would just take turns. One even crowed in the middle of the night. (probably just to get his word in)
I have a 6 mo old rooster that hasent crowed yet. He's huge and beautiful. Am I rushing it? All my other roosters seemed to crow long before this. He is the only one I have and if he's going to be this quiet I will be very happy!! Has anyone else have this happen with a standard cochin?
