Sick hen - possible Blackhead (Histomoniasis) POOP PICTURE

Thanks Mrs. B. I believe you are right. Can I ask how you (or others) would proceed if: -additional vet expense was out of the question -your chicken was eating enough but exhausted after expending energy eating -chicken is usually enthusiastic when I walk into the bathroom, pecking at the...

Sick hen - possible Blackhead (Histomoniasis) POOP PICTURE

I'm having a hard time determining my hen's illness. No respiratory or coccidiosis symptoms. Her poo is sulfur yellow, which is apparently a classic hallmark of Blackhead/Histomoniasis, which is mostly seen in turkeys. She and her sisters do get to free range in the backyard daily and we have...

My favorite girl, Juliet, died yesterday :(

Thank you for your kind, supportive words. Agreed, Duhlina, that it's just a part of chicken keeping--that actually makes me feel better, knowing sometimes these things just happen. She did not have nasal discharge or rattly breathing, so it isn't very clear. Thanks guys!

My favorite girl, Juliet, died yesterday :(

I noticed how a pale comb and lethargy around noon yesterday and by 4pm she had died. I normally eyeball my girls in their coop every morning, and I can't remember if I did that and everything seemed normal, or if I missed seeing her in distress. Anyway, I did notice around noon and...

Hen suddenly lethargic, pale comb, green diarrhea

Eggcessive, thank you! I think your advice saved my girl. I'm aware of coccidiosis but it didn't come up when I googled her symptoms. Thank you so much!

Hen suddenly lethargic, pale comb, green diarrhea

She and the other girls were allowed out for a supervised free range around our backyard this AM. I'm not sure what she might have gotten into (we have a veggie garden she likes to dig in for worms), it consists of: asparagus, lettuce, 2 potato plants (which she ignores for the worms). There...

Anybody in San Diego interested in exchanging chicken sitting with us?

We need a chicken sitter soon too, Rancho Penasquitos if anyone is interested. Three visits, approx 15 minutes to replenish food/water, take the eggs. :)

Chicken is unhealthily obsessed with me

And I do take her out daily to hold/pet her. She runs from me, then seems to tolerate being handled, so I'm not sure that's what she wants.

Chicken is unhealthily obsessed with me

I have a new flock of 5 girls. Juliet is the dominant, and last addition to the flock. She hasn't really bonded with the others, who are very tight, but she goes berserk when I walk outside, and anytime I'm out there gardening, etc. They're either in their coop/run, or a mobile run where they...

Today, I paid all of my parents debts...

Awww. That's an incredibly kind gesture and I'm sure you've given her much peace of mind.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Woohoo, Juliet laid her first egg today! :) The girls were in their mobile run, and she (I swear) was trying to tell me she wanted back in her coop/run, so I let them back in and she ran for the nest box as if to say "gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now!". Then she started "purring" loudly...

Bobcats coyotes owls and hawks, oh my!

So sorry about Nugget. :( No way will I let them free range. In addition to their coop/run, I just got them a mobile run built with HW cloth and 2 locks on the door. I'm pretty paranoid about keeping them safe. Who knows, these predators are persistent and crafty so it could be a lesson...

Bobcats coyotes owls and hawks, oh my!

... and it begins. I've had my pullets out in their new Ft Knox hardware cloth enclosed coop only 2 weeks ago and we had our first visitor last night. These are my first chickens and a dream of mine to have them for about 10 years. We live on a canyon in San Diego, and are well aware of the...
