I put a female Marans chick in with the turkeys - she is 1 week older than them but miles ahead developmentally. that seems to be helping to "activate" them.
So that's everyone's experience? This is my first time with turkeys. I just love them but can't figure out why they aren't thriving. Their wing feathers have grown in but they are 3 weeks old now and still seem very immature. My 4 week old Marans chicks (also hatched 3) are brutes by comparison...
I just hatched 3 baby turkeys too. They are so sweet and completely different from chicks and goslings in personality. But a word to the wise: they are much more fragile! (or at least mine are). At two weeks you have to add some cod liver oil to their water - a tip I learned on the BYC Forum -...
Thanks so much, Miss Lydia. I actually just stumbled across this old post from Pete :https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/472851/dewlap-exhibition-toulouse-incubation-diary-with-pics-hatch-day
which is just what I need! So here's how I think things stand at present:
- 3 eggs at 15 days 2nd...
I have 3 Toulouse goose eggs in the incubator at present. It is Day 14 and I am not at all sure about what I am seeing with the candling. Egg 1: Thought it was doing well, saw dark spot, which I don't see anymore. It continues to get darker inside but I don't see clear veins and at the small end...
Hello Peter,
I have 3 Toulouse goose eggs in the incubator at present. It is Day 14 and I am not at all sure about what I am seeing with the candling. Egg 1: Thought it was doing well, saw dark spot, which I don't see anymore. It continues to get darker inside but I don't see clear veins and at...
I have 3 toulouse grey geese in the incubator since May 4th. Will candle them tonight to see if any development is visible. I have 3 more eggs from a new goose that's still laying. As soon as I'm sure she's finished I will start those even though it will make the hatch complicated. Hatched 3...
Opened the eggs today (Day 30) to see what went wrong. 3 of 5 had internally pipped. None had externally pipped or absorbed their yolk. They all seem to have died in shell at the same time - either because I started the high humidity too early (Day 27) or opened the lid to make a hole for 1 that...
Thank your for your quick response. The eggs were rather old - Egg E was laid on March 11 and I was away, my neighbour kept the eggs for me - without turning or misting. So I was worried they had lost too much water. Then my goose - the mother -died so I started the eggs anyway, at the end of...
Wish I'd listened to you - I made an airhole for my internally pipped gosling on Day 28 like it said to on another guide on this site and promptly killed the poor thing. :(
Oh Pete! If you are still following this please answer! I have 5 Toulouse goose eggs in lockdown in a Suro20 automatic incubator. Day 28 now. When I candled on day 26 one (egg "E") seemed so far ahead that on Day 27 (afternoon), I stopped the rocker and raised humidity to 80 from 50. It was...
I opened the 5 eggs at the end of day 24 - dead - 3 were underdeveloped and 2 were perfectly formed but "shrink wrapped" in their membranes. So the humidity wasn't high enough. Final tally: 3 out of 9 for my first try. Sad but at least I know (I think) what went wrong at the end. thanks for...
Day 23 came and went. Now it's the start of day 24. 5 eggs in incubator (37.5 temp. 65% humidity). No sound or movement. They were rolled around alot on day 20 by a chick and I opened the lid briefly about 4 times to remove chicks day 21.
Should I wait any longer or open the eggs? The anxiety is...
I've been keeping hens and geese for a few years and have just begun trying to hatch some myself...not going that well. Bought 12 fertilized eggs at a local aviculture meeting from 4 different sellers:
Have a SURO 20 incubator currently runnng: temp. 37.5 humidity 65% with spikes up to 76% after...
