I have a buff orpington that goes broody once a month, like clockwork. Rather than break her, this time we decided to put fertile eggs under her. My cousin bought 13 copper Marans eggs and had them shipped. When I opened them, there was what appeared to be a little bit of white in the carton...
Hello,
Has anyone ever heard of a hen going through the motions of laying an egg, but not laying one?
I have a RIR of undetermined age. She laid daily when we got her last year. This summer, around June (I live in CA), she began to lay eggs that were sort of lopsided, and some had wrinkles...
Really? Shoot. I have a limit: no more than two chickens at a time. Aside from being lonely, is there a reason you need two chicks? What if I introduced the chick to the hen slowly by putting her cage in the coop during the day (with no way for the hen to get at her, of course)?
Thanks for...
Hi all,
I had two hens, raised together as chicks. I lost one yesterday. I'd like to get another. My question is: what would be better: raising another chick and introducing her to the older when the chick is bigger, or getting a grown hen? I've read posts about introducing new hens to a...
Hi there,
I'm sorry to report that I had her euthanized yesterday. She was not improving at all, and could only walk a few steps before collapsing with her head under her body. She couldn't eat or drink unless I fed her by hand. I feel awful. The vet said it could be anything from lesions...
Thanks for the responses! I really do appreciate them. I tried to make a brace out of duct tape, but it was too slippery (I used the silver side, I didn't want to take off all the feathers around her neck!). Someone mentioned vet tape. I am going to call the vet.
No change today
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate the input.
I saw this link earlier today in my searches. I took a picture of my hen today, if only I could figure out how to display it here. My chicken can hold her head up for a time. But then it flops to the left and her head is upside down. She...
Update: 5/16/10
Hen is still hanging in there. The more I read, the more I think she has crookneck. Last night I went out to the coop expecting to find her dead, and she was laying on the floor of the coop because she's no longer able to get up to her roost. She was alive, though, and I put...
Hello,
This is my first post and I am new to raising chickens (aside from the ones we had when I was a kid). I have two hens I bought from my local feed store. They are about ten months. The man at the feed store says they are vaccinated. About three days ago, the Araucana had a prolapsed...
