    Introducing one chicken to flock

I introduce new chickens by setting up a wall of chicken wire in the coop. They get to see each other for several weeks before I start letting them out. Hope that might be something you're able to try.

    Does a fox do this?

I haven't seen that before, sorry for the massive loss you suffered. I don't recommend chicken wire for anything more than keeping chickens in. It doesn't hold up against anything that wants to get in after them. I use welded wire. Hopefully you can recover from this, but definitely add...

    HELLLPP hens not laying

You can also try increasing protein by adding some black oil sunflower seeds (BOSS), or something else just to help boost protein levels. Sometimes it helps, but as stated above, if the heat is really bad, that might be a factor....

Anyway to make nesting boxes more appealing?

I use golf balls in mine, and have not had any issues with random spots....good luck!

    Composting with Chickens

I don't know what the pine shavings might do to the PH of your soil. For that reason, and because I'm too lazy to look, I don't compost in my pine shavings. Of course, now I'm going to go look :)

Still no eggs. What am I doing wrong?

BOSS = Black Oil Sunflower Seeds When I moved 30 miles west, I took my chickens with me. They didn't lay for over a month due to the stress of the move, etc. Just keep feeding her, and eventually she will start laying, again. The BOSS will help increase protein in her system. I suppose...

    Who here is into Photography?

I'm not sure what you mean. If you switch to manual mode, and use a very rapid shutter speed, you'll get pictures, sure. But if you don't know what you're doing, then you won't get very good pictures. As in, they will be under exposed, or over exposed more often than they will be 'just...

    no eggs

I have 11 hens and I always get a drop off in the winter, it's natural with the shorter days. My breakdown of hens: - 5 easter eggers (almost 3 years old) - 3 buff orpingtons (almost a year old) - 3 black sex link (almost a year old) For me, what works is this (and might not work for you)...

I think my chickens hate their coop!

This is unnecessary. The chickens will be fine without the extra heat. If anything, the added element of the radiant heater could be more of an unnecessary risk. I think raising the roost will help, but they definitely like it up high in the trees if they can get in them. If you can find...

    Corn and Soy free......?

Late reply, but during molt I start throwing black oil sunflower seeds out, cooking up oatmeal and mixing in ground beef. That's just my way of increasing protein without getting soy protein in the eggs.

New member has hens with worms

Thanks for the info. During the process of worming, are the eggs safe to eat? If not, for how long do you avoid the eggs?

    No fuzzies on the bottom

I have a chicken (easter egger) that is just over 2 years old. For a while she's had no fuzzy feathers on her bottom. I'm assuming one of the other chickens is plucking them, as I had 1 other chicken that was being aggressive to the other birds, which I have isolated for the past several...

New member has hens with worms

So how do you know if they have worms, or do you just deworm to be safe? I realize some worms are large enough to see, but most worms are too small to really see.

New Place, Ready To Add More (Berryville, VA)

I have 5 easter eggers that are about 2 years old. They aren't very consistent layers, but have picked up this spring for the time being. With the black sex links, now I'm thinking by this fall I'll be trying to figure out how to deal with all the eggs. The astralorps would have been a little...
