I have yellow meat birds with baby jersey giants. The yellow ones seem to be bullying my JGs. Should I let them work it out or stand over them policing their behavior....lol.
I hate seeing them be so mean
Hmmm...
If I got some Cochins just for hatching out JG's, I would simply remove the Cochin's own eggs to prevent the cross from occuring? And I could still eat their eggs...
The only thing that occurs to me about that scenario is if there was an emergency that forced us to total self...
Hello All,
I have about 15 Black Jersey Giants right now and I love them. They lay enough eggs for my family to eat and give away plenty. They are big and yummy when harvested for meat. And they never attack my kids.
But, they never get broody. So I am wondering about mixing in another...
Well, I am frugal and I hate waste. My vhickens get lots of scraps from plates and cutting boards at my house and they love it. But I also have tossed trimmings from deer I have taken and they eat it up. Even rib cages get picked over over a course of a couple weeks. They seem fine.
I am...
I have some jersey giants and they are a year old and laying well. I have been feeding them good layer crumbles since 8 weeks old.
I now have 14 JG chicks, & 10 cornish crosses in the brooder just a few days old. Of course they are getting chick feed now but..... Can i give all my lottle ones...
That shouldn't be a problem. The hens are super docile. As long as you monitor how they get along just in case your JG hen gets picked on but i wouldn't expect that
Lol.
Well an update on my flock. I had 10 girls and 2 boys. It has been hovering between zero and minus 10 degrees overnight for what feels like a month. I have a cheap crappy homemade coop but it is insulated on the 3 windward sides.
Anyway, i found a dead hen out there day before yesterday...
10 month old Black Jersey Giant. Third week of nights below 0. I think it was minus 6 yesterday overnight. Plus wind.
Coop has 3 insulated windward walls. Ventilation is sketchy. There are 3 vents but the thing has gaps and all due to not being built by a pro so i've tended to think of...
First, i had 12 and they did not all freeze. This has been the worst winter i can remember. Found dead chicken yesterday when bringing out water. Gonna do the butchering today to see if there is any obvious explanation.
Is this my fault? Is a light a requirement? Do chickens just keel over...
Just an opinion here - I mean no offense to the breeder mention in the post I copied above; however, NO ONE should be paying $150 for a set of 12+ Jersey Giant hatching eggs. This is one of the things many of us in this for the long haul for the continuous improvement of the breed have been...
Well, i am new at this. And i suspect my set up may not get everyone's approval. I have my roosts about 3 feet high and poop boards at about 28 inches. They are about 10 months old and look big to me. How would i know?
I need hearty and durable birds. It has been minus 10 here for weeks it...
