Hello and thanks for stopping by!
My name is Matty.
I am new to the chicken world, but not to the animal world; my family has 4 fish, 2 lizards, 2 cats, 1 bunny and 1 dog and now 11 chickens. I am a huge animal lover and so it's my fault that we have most of these pets. I am loving this...
I have 9 hens and 1 roo, and one of the hens won't stop laying down. She runs away when I walk up to her, but as soon as I stop she lays down on her side again. He comb looks fine, she runs normally, and she's not panting. Any ideas?

Looks like it may be a little abscess. She could've scratched herself and got it started, or something along those lines. I would definitely keep her separated so that the others don't peck at it. I had a hen with a facial abscess last winter...
Almost-2-month-old Leghorn pullet Pearl has had a bump on her beak for a while and now it's starting to bleed a little.
It's shiny because I put Triple Antibiotic ointment on it. She's living in a rabbit's cage with one other pullet and 4 cockerels.
She is the only one we're keeping, the rest...
Hey so I have chickens, but I'm pet sitting a friends flock and when I arrived today there Barred Rock (I think) rooster was dead. We stopped by on Sunday to see their routine and his comb was like that then. The owner said it had been like that his whole life, he was just over a year old. No...
We have 4 SS, and they're wonderful. The aren't come-sit-in-your-lap birds, but they are energetic, curious, and very funny. They also aren't the best layers, and we've never had any go broody. Our only roo is a SS and he is the sweetest thing! He comes in the house, eats treats from our hands...
Easter Egger's:
Grace (Oxymoron)
Luna (Had a white face that looked like the moon)
Lollop (Looooved jumping)
Chickadee (Named by the 3 year old boy I babysit)
Cracker (Always loved perching like a parrot)
Speckled Sussex's:
Jane (Last to be named, so like Jane Doe)
Pandora (Most curious)
Vivian...
Chickens are pretty instinctual; they know (more of less) what they need. If it were me, I'd give them access too dry loose dirt in the shade to cool off in as well as the water tub, they'll choose the one they need and it'll give them extra water just in case.
I've only had chickens for a year, so I'd wait for someone else to comment as well, but my guess is it's a pecking order thing. Someone has to be at the bottom, right? We have Speckled Sussex's and EE's, so they're all brown except for one EE, who is white. She is different and thus at the...
