    chick banding danger

Well they settled down later that night and so I left them on. They seem fine now. We play with them daily so we will be sure to check for tightness on the bands each day. Thanks for all the info!

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

I really dig your brooder! I was going to do something like this in the shed we have out back, but it was full! We got the baby chicks before I got around to cleaning out the shed, so they have spent the past 4 weeks in the laundry room. That won't happen again! Is your brooder build...

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

For starters we went with 3 paper boxes spliced with tape, a hex wire top and light. Now it is time for the stinkies to go outside. These are pictures of my intermediate outside mobile brooder. It was made from up cycled pallet wood. My plan was to install a ceramic light socket close to...

    Ready for outdoor living?

So moving the current setup of 3 paper boxes fused into one long 52"x12" box out to the shed would work for the next 2-3 weeks? They currently reside in the laundry room, pine shavings help but there's still a smell that greets all that step through side door (our main thouroughfare)...

    Ready for outdoor living?

I am curious if these chicks are feathered enough to stand moving to an outside brooder. Temps in AL are set to hit the 40's in the next few days, so I am a little concerned. I would have the light on the outdoor brooder with an enclosed section and an outdoor play yard (see MotherEarthNews...

    Help! We need Identifying!

Great! I had read somewhere that Doms or Cuckoo Marans (can't remember which as my brain has ingested dump truck loads of info right before and since we acquired the fuzzballs) could be sexed by the size and consistency of the spot on their heads. As you can see all of mine are mottled...

    Help! We need Identifying!

So I've got 12 chicks... and I'm mostly OK with that except I'm concerned I've got a whole flock of roos! There should be 3 different breeds here. Dom, Cuckoo Maran, and buff Orp. These were cheap chicks so they could really be anything. All help appreciated.
