Comment by 'mdnees' in article 'Raising Cornish X for Meat – The TRUTH'

We picked up our first set of Cornish X's over the weekend - 17 of them. Since temps were well below zero last night, they are currently being housed in our basement in a large kiddie pool. I hope that once their feathers come in, we can move them outside where they'll be able to forage some...

    Cleaning Duck Run

We have a run about 32ft long that is shared by 3 ducks and 8 chickens. All are 8 weeks old. The run is more so rocks - we have clay soil so the rocks help it from not getting so muddy. The problem I'm running into is cleaning it. I tried to rake it but nothing happened. Either the ground...

Can Sweet PDZ be used by itself?

I use PDZ by itself on the poop board in our chicken coop. Our chicks are only 8wks old and actually sleep on the poop board. It makes clean up a breeze. I imagine it would be similar with ducks. (My opinion)

Ideas on how to make a little cash off of what I got on my farm...

Not sure on how "desert" your town is, but what about selling fresh produce? Chickens offer excellent fertilizer. I know its not exactly "animal related" but to me they go hand in hand.

Adding Adult Hens to Flock of 8 8wk Old Pullets

I've been searching around the forums and I'm beginning to think I've got this backwards I've read adding chicks to your flock, but I want to do the opposite - I want to add some adult hens to my flock of 8 pullets (4 Barred Rock/4 RIR) who are going on 8 weeks old right now. The reason in...

    Duck Pop Door Dimensions

Thanks! And if you don't mind - how tall is your housing for your ducks? I read somewhere (I think Storey's Guide) the walls had to be at least 4 feet tall, but was curious if it was okay to go 3 feet.

    Building the Duck Run

I guess it really just depends on your surrounding predators. We used to have a pekin and rouen in a chain linked fence with cattle fencing on top with a small gap... we ran out of fencing. Within two weeks, something got both of them. Second time around we have 3 pekins and we made sure to...

    Duck Pop Door Dimensions

I've searched google and the BYC forums and have been unable to find the answer I'm looking for - hoping someone can help me out. I'm about to finish my duck coop and I need to know how big to make the pop door. Does it really matter how big the door is? The coop is built from pallets and I...

    Young duck charging us

Our Rouen drake used to charge us whenever we turned our back when near their pen. The second you turned back to him, he'd stop like nothing happened, haha. He only did it near his pen - we took it as a protective thing. (My son, then 2yrs, thought it was funny and would charge back at him!)...

First Time Chicken Owner - Indiana

Thanks for the advice! The ducks and chickens are separated now and will have separate coops once they're moved outside. They will share a run but will take turns free ranging. I'm only interested in females right now for eggs. I'm pretty sure I have one female Pekin because she is LOUD...

First Time Chicken Owner - Indiana

Hey Everybody! My name is Megan and I'm from Reelsville, Indiana. I joined BYC awhile ago as a way to get ideas and information on everything related to owning and caring for chickens. Well I am now a proud "Mommy" to 4 Barred Rocks, 4 RIR, and 3 Pekin ducks. They are about 6 weeks old now...

What predators are known for digging under coops?

That's a good idea - burying the rocks. We might have to do that one... but with cinder blocks. We have a stack in the woods that could be put to some use!
