    is this bumblefoot?

OK, I'm going to brush her feet tonight and i'll post new pics. Also, I've been cutting her nails a little at a time, like i do with the dogs, so i can get the quick to recede (i assume it works the same way) her nails were so long they curled around her toes and she was walking funny when we...

    is this bumblefoot?

Another question about my Sultan's feet. I just adopted her, from a "show" situation where it seems she wasn't allowed to scratch or actually be on the ground. I think she must have been caged full time. So i've been trying to take care of her nails, and I noticed that her feet look...

    toenail maintenance

Hi. I just took over a couple hens from a woman who shows them. They both have crazy curly long toenails. I get it, as they really don't know how to "chicken" and I assume they've never been allowed to scratch. So i cut them and was able to get them pretty short, but now they're just these...

    leg issues

So we just hatched 3 Polish chicks. Two are getting big and strong and fast, but one seems to have various leg issues. I think she has spraddle legs, so i fitted her with hobbles. But as you can see from the pic, even in the hobbles, her right foot turns out. Weird thing is, that's the foot...

Spraddle Leg - Splay Leg Treatment Instructions

Here's a pic of how she's carrying her foot. Should I just let it go as is and see how it works out? Or any ideas on anything else I should try? I should mention that I have an 8 year old daughter who is already smitten with this baby.

Spraddle Leg - Splay Leg Treatment Instructions

I have a newly hatched Polish chick with what I assume is spraddle leg. We put her in hobbles and it's definitely helping to keep the legs in, but as you can see from the photo, her one foot turns out. So she's still not walking on the feet correctly. The weird thing is, she seems to be...

    Integration!!!

So I have two groups of chickens...three BRs are about 4 months old (one is a rooster) and the other three EEs are 3 months old. The BRs have been living in the main coop and the babies have been in a mini aframe coop/run during the da, and then in a cat carrier inside the main coop at night...

    first day free-ranging

I let my flock out to free-range for a couple hours this evening. It was their first time out of the run (I've had them for about 3 weeks). Those were some happy chickens at bedtime!

    I need some sympathy

Uggh, this sucks! I hope you can get things fixed up fairly easily.

Neighbor threatening to "take out my roosters"

wow, the fact that he comes out every day to glare at you sounds really confrontational. I'm not exactly sure what you should do, but I don't recommend crying in front of him. Then he'll just know that he can intimidate you. You don't move to farm land if you are offended by farm animals. If...

    How to convert this coop?

i had originally intended to put it inside the run, but it doeesn't fit well. or at least not well enough that the other hens wouldn't be cramped. of course, my other option would be just keeping them in a plastic dog crate in the run, but then they don't get the real benefits of being...

    How to convert this coop?

So i bought this little coop to keep my chicks in, until they're ready to integrate with the hens. It's small (45x56) and pretty lightweight (24 lbs), so i worry about predators. I want to modify it a bit to make it safe enough to keep the babies outside. (they've been living inside in a...

do they need a better dirt bath?

well, i did throw a bucket of sand into the run and at first they just ran up and ate a bunch of it. when i went back out later though, all three were lying in the sand, and it was spread out, like they had likely been scratching and rolling in it. So I'd say they prefer it over the clay.
