I have a cabinet incubator that I was told was a GQF, but I think it's actually a homemade one. It needs a new heating element, but I'm having a hard time finding one that's long enough. I've ordered 2 different ones already that were too short, and smaller in diameter than the original...
This boy is slated for the freezer eventually. He's not quite a year old and I think he has mycoplasmosis. Is it ok to butcher him now, or will his meat be tainted? He eats and drinks just fine, but he doesn't display at all, or even elongate his snood. He probably doesn't feel great either. I'd...
I recently got my first incubator, an Incuview. I first set turkey eggs, and they started hatching 3 days early, several pipping the wrong end. Out of 20 developed eggs, 10 hatched. A couple pipped and then died, and the rest died without pipping. One of the poults died shortly after hatching...
She stopped panting for a while, but then earlier today she was panting quite a bit, and I was afraid we were going to loose her. I just changed her bandages and gave her some water from a dropper. Then I gave her some scrambled egg mixed with a bit of yogurt and she ate a small amount of that...
Her color is definitely off, more pale and grey and not much pink/red. She has been panting, so I brought her inside where it's cooler. She's now lying down with her head on the floor. She probably did injure something inside, so I don't know if we can save her. :( But it would cost quite a bit...
This morning something, possibly a fox or coyote, attacked and killed a couple hens, and injured my turkey hen. I cleaned and disinfected the wounds well, and then bandaged her neck with manuka honey on the wounds. However, she does not seem to be able to lift her head up, and has a hard time...
I ended up wrapping that egg in a damp washcloth, and then went to bed. In the morning there were 3 more poults that had hatched, including the washcloth wrapped one! Half of them have now hatched, plus 2 that died after pipping, so there are still 8 more eggs in the incubator that have not pipped.
I think that first one died, but now there's another pipped at the wrong end. Is there something else I can put on it, as it looks like the membrane is drying out and I don't have bag balm.
It's now been close to 24 hours since that egg pipped, and I can tell the poult is still alive in there. I've removed the eggshell around the pip since he doesn't seem to be able to unzip himself, and wrapped the egg in a moist cloth leaving it open where the beak is peeking through the hole...
My poults were due to hatch on Sunday, but this morning some of them were pipping already, 3 days early! I turned off the egg turner and increased humidity immediately. It's been about 12 hours since the first eggs pipped. The first egg that pipped died, but the 3rd and 4th hatched out just fine...
A couple months ago I bought 4 pekins to use as breeders. The guy had 3 pekin/appleyard mixes he wanted to get rid of for cheap, so I thought I'd take them for Christmas dinner. I had no idea at the time that ducks are usually slaughtered young. Now they are at least 20 weeks and it's time for...
I am starting the process of changing our neighborhood covenants to allow small livestock. I am trying to come up with reasons that will convince people about how wonderful it is to have chickens and other poultry nearby. Please help me think of as many reasons as possible! Here is what I have...
We do not have an HOA or neighborhood board of any kind. I don't know who would enforce the covenants, or how I would go about changing them. It looks like that will take some researching. They were put in place in 1986 when the neighborhood was first built, but we have only been here for 6 1/2...
I actually did offer them some eggs at one point, but they had just bought a whole bunch and declined. They have not ever shown interest in our eggs. I will be replying to the message, but I need time to process this and make sure I can be amicable in my reply first. And I'd like to be able to...
