Interesting...I read that Orpington and australorps were both broody...May have to incubate. Had a buff Orpington go B roody a couple of times a year but I didn't have a rooster so she just sat there for nothing for days and days till I made her go outside. Then she would puff up and stalk off. Lol.
I currently have a motley crew of different chickens. Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Cinnamon Queens, black sex links, leghorns, and some I don't even know what they are. I finally got everyone integrated and in one coop and all getting along. Some were much older and no longer laying eggs and...
I am planning to get one rooster for a flock of black australorp and speckled Sussex hens. any experience here with an australorp rooster as far as temperament, etc...also has anyone bred any hybrid from this mix?
Thank you for your help. This is a great site with great people. I will just watch him for awhile and make sure he doesn't hurt them. He is really good at keeping watch over the "girls" and keeping them out of trouble.
5 months old for the pullets but not laying yet. Rooster is also 5 months old too. The pullets are 2 Brahmas and a barred rock
Roo is a barred rock. Brahman may not lay for a couple of months yet and the barred rock is small for a 5 month old chicken. Rooster is harassing an 18 month old RIR...
The pullets I got with him have not started laying yet. I think the issue that I am having is that he doesn't have enough hens to satisfy himself. My leghorns are too fast so he only has 2 hens available until the others are of age so he is really stressing the two out.
I have never had a roo before. This was a mistake at the hatchery! However, by the time I realized it I had become very attached to him. My question: Since I never had one before and he has now reached maturity...I am not sure if he is bullying or mating. Just how long does a mate last and if...
I like to keep my brood guessing. They never know when I am coming with treats or what I am bringing. I found if I only offered treats to get them to go into the coop at night, sometimes they would give me trouble. Like they would decide that they would rather stay out than go back in for...
FYI: Just wanted to let you know that your advice has been very helpful. I have not gotten rid of the guinea but I do not allow him into the run or coop at night. He is very helpful in keeping the older chickens under control when free-ranging and is an excellent watchdog. He now goes into the...
If I got rid of the guinea (and I will) is it too late for the remaining 4-month olds to integrate and learn the ins and outs of free ranging. My leghorns and older chickens stay fairly close to the house and coop while the younger ones just go nuts running all over and getting lost and not...
I keep reading how by letting chickens free range integration is easier and they will eventually all get along. I have a slightly different problem. I got guineas to go with my flock and a neighbor dog got into my yard and killed all but one guinea and three chickens. So I got two leghorns who...
My coop is infested with bugs that look a little like some kind of roach or beetle. I s this what they call chicken bugs? how can I get rid of them without harming the chickens? I also have young chicks in there. They are even in my feed that is outside the coop. in a brand new bag.
