    A fox.

I'm having this problem now, few days ago bright red fox circling the coop and run trying to figure out how to get in, broad daylight. I had to chase it. Yesterday, lighter golden fox trying to get into coop. Had to chase it, was in no hurry to leave. It might be possible you had multiple foxes...

    What type of predator...?

Do you have bear in your area? The bear have torn the nesting box right off the side of my coop, torn off the door i made to fix that, bent a wrought iron birdfeeder pole, bent a section of kennel fence, and splintered my deck railing. The state DEP reports all time high instances of bear...

    Buff orpington taken by hawk

Mine have been attacked by hawks, get some netting from the hardware and garden store to cover your run. I hate to confine them for life. My survivors have learned that hiding is good. We got a rooster this year, a friend said they're good for protecting the hens, so far it has helped, one hawk...

Hen with chronic rales/ratteling acts normal in every way

I have one like that too. I don't know why. She stopped laying altogether now. I used some VetRX on her and she stopped with the sound effects, then did it for one day and stopped again. No clue. She's a 3 y.o. RI red I inherited from someone who didn't want them anymore b/c they weren't up to...

Intermittent respiratory gurgling/ wheezing/ cough / sneeze noises

When I got home from work there was no wheezing or sound effects, just lots of normal looking chicken poop, so I coated her up with Vet-Rx per the instructions, put worming stuff in everyone's water, and sprung my hen back outside. Hopefully whatever the problem is, is over now.

Intermittent respiratory gurgling/ wheezing/ cough / sneeze noises

Addendum: I just thought of something more to add, the sick one smells horrible. It smells like the insides of an alimentary canal. If anyone has ever been bird hunting, and like the abdominal cavity and viscera are pierced, it's this undescribable barfy odor - the sick one smells like that...

Intermittent respiratory gurgling/ wheezing/ cough / sneeze noises

I have 3 hens, 2 rhode island reds and one gold crosslink, they're about 2-3 years old, neighborhood yard birds and casual layers. They're recovering from what I think was a case of winter "vent gleet" by giving them electrolytes and probiotics in their water. Two look fantastic and no sound...

How to keep chickens warm without using a heat lamp??

I'm sorry. I thought it made sense to look through existing posts and have a group discussion of a common thread. I sincerely apologize, it was not my intention to hijack your personal thread.

How to keep chickens warm without using a heat lamp??

Thanks to everyone in this post, we all survived, the news showed -24 in our town! Fortunately this is highly unusual and not sustained long term. After reading more around the forum, I understand my Rhode Island reds and one cross link are right in their element here in New England, and I...

How to keep chickens warm without using a heat lamp??

Ha ha you know how to cheer me up! They went to bed because I made it all dark in there. Hopefully they will just sleep through the whole thing.

    New Year's Day Massacer!!!

I'm sorry I hate when the predators get the poor defenseless chickens. There's a good thread on here in the information section about determining what the predator was by the m.o. and what you find. It is possible it was a racoon or racoons? From my understanding racoons are mass murderers, as...

How to keep chickens warm without using a heat lamp??

Thank you for the answers. We're in CT and it's supposed to be like 9 below. My man friend told me to do the same thing so I covered all the surfaces, used some items like a hay bale, wood pallets, and half a dog kennel as wind breaks, draped a tarp and moving blanket over the coop. I might...

    No more chickens :-(

Its with a broken heart I report when I went out to feed them this morning, I found both chickens killed. Nothing has ever bothered them in 2 years. After reading the stickys it must have been a raccoon. Milli died up near the nest box, she had some head and eye trauma. Poor Vanilli I'll spare...
