Suggestions as of where to get show quality Light (Or other) Brahmas?

Hey! For 4H this year I'm doing the Poultry project. Until now we've mostly kept production-type strains for eggs, but if I want to show we figured we should settle on a breed. We ordered some Light Brahma eggs from Schlecht Hatchery (http://www.schlechthatchery.com/) last year, and although...

Top reasons for late-term embryo death?

Hello! Last time I incubated eggs I had a terrible problem with hatch rates- Out of 28 eggs, 12 hatched. The ones that hatched (8 males and 4 females! That would be my luck!) were healthy, but after waiting a week after the scheduled hatch I opened up the other eggs to try to see if they were...

    "Older" hens not laying?

It isn't so much I want to get rid of them- Basically, with the set up we have now, we have two coops- A larger, more heated one, and a smaller, older, less heated one. The larger one is where we usually keep the laying hens in the winter, and they are cooped up except on very, very nice days...

    "Older" hens not laying?

Hello! We have 3 Leghorns hens and 8 or so Comet hens. 4 of the Comets are 2009 hatches (We had 22 hatched, and 4 were hens. Very sad.) but the others were hatched about March 2008. We let the head Comet hen sit on a nest this summer so we could get some Americauna crosses, but the other comets...

When to know if they are mature enough?

So, we got some hatching eggs this april, and ended up (Of course) with 16 Roos and 4 hens. We do not want that many roosters around, and definately don't want to hold them through the winter, so we decided to butcher them. We've never butchered anything before, and are wondering when we know if...

    Chick's beak sloughed/fell off?

Well, I've seperated him out. I'll probably put something on it and see how it goes- I'll give him water and I'll research tube feeding, but I'll see how he goes. Right now he just wants to sleep.

    Chick's beak sloughed/fell off?

The guineas were said to be 3 days when we got them, but we estimated them to be more like 2 weeks, which would mean they are almost 3 weeks old now. I just seperated them out, and they are not happy at all....crying and crying anc crying. But the chickies are all taking a long nap. I hope they...

    Chick's beak sloughed/fell off?

So, earlier I was asking about nose bleeds from our ~2 wk old chicks. Most of them have them. I really didn't get a definative answer on this, so I figured I'd just add medication to the water and see. Well. I noticed today one chick's beak was very bloody. Upon closer inspection I realized that...

    Removed skin

We had this happen to a rooster, only it was on his leg. Dog attacked him and ripped off the skin to the muscle. Just clean it (As gently as you can) to get any grit out, then put antibiotic ointment on. Re-apply as needed. Put them in a smaller container (Ideally seperate from one another) and...

Chick with not fully closed opening where they absorb the yolk from?

....Very similar to this (https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=192135) actually, but not nearly that bad, and the protruding bit is much smaller and totally dried up.

Chick with not fully closed opening where they absorb the yolk from?

I don't know what it is called, but it's where they absorb the yolk from, that usually heals over, that could be likened to our belly buttons? This Light Brahma chick I have is about 4 days old. He seemed to be fine, but recently he is more lethargic and I looked at him today and noticed that he...

Chick w/ not-totally closed opening that it absorbs the egg yolk from?

    Chicks nose bleeding?

Well, we might not seperate the Keets. We just tried putting up a divider in there between the two sides, with the chicks on one side and the 3 keets on the other, and the poor keets just kept crying and crying until they figured out how to get past the barrier and back with the chicks again. Ugh.

    Chicks nose bleeding?

Hey, We just hatched out some Comet chicks. They are in a plastic stock tank with two heat lamps (One at each side) and the thing is covered every where except above the heat lamps to keep out drafts. The temperature is at 100, and we will be moving it down to 90 this week. (They are almost a...
