Haha, music sounds like a good idea. :)
Update: during the "winter" (as winter as it can be in southern california), the non-laying/molting season, it was so nice to have 0 noise. But now they are all starting to lay again, and they are louder than before!
I have one that just stands on...
Did you ever hear anything? I saw in the estates news paper, someone wrote an article about how beneficial chickens are and it was a well written article.
Have they been harassing you at all with their dumb notices?
My delaware has been taking it upon herself to sing the song of her people...
I dumped about my whole ice bucket from the freezer into the water container and put electrolytes in it. I closed up their hen house too, so they can't go into that hot box (since I can't help the temp in there). Now they have to stay in the shade with the mist.
Thank you BYC community!
Update:
It hit 108 by 11am, according to my car. I tried to find a kiddy pool in town, and was unsuccessful. The misters seem to be helping a lot though. Their mouths are not open as much as they were yesterday. I had to coax them out into the run this morning, because they were scared of them...
Thank you for the suggestions. My husband found the mister system and set it up in the run for tomorrow. I hope that will be enough, and they actually go into the mist.
I have a big watermelon in the fridge for them tomorrow too.
I think you're right on the ice not lasting. If it's...
It's been super hot here, and I lost one hen today to heat stroke. My daughter is crushed because it was her favorite.
It was about 105 today, and I was putting ice water out for them and making sure they had water but it wasn't enough. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 108! So even more hot! I...
Update:
I was locking them in the hen house at night and not letting them out until after the time she generally stops her nonsense and that actually worked. But then we had to go out of town for a week and a half. I'm pretty sure she was doing this obnoxiousness the whole time (because I...
I don't have a rooster. I live in a neighborhood, so I can't have a rooster.
Lol. I'm glad you know what noise I'm talking about. That noise drives me up the wall, because I don't want to irritate my neighbors and I really dislike being woken up in the morning. I'm not a morning person at...
Haha rant away! I feel the same way. I can't let my roam the yard either, they always dig all our plants out of pots to get at the pumice in the potting soil (even though they have plenty of grit!).
Thank you for the suggestions, I think I'll try some of that tomorrow.
I really wish her...
Hi all!
Has anyone had a super noisy hen? I don't mean with their egg songs, I have one that just makes the most atrocious noises all stinking day long. She wakes me up when all the windows are closed, and the coop is more than 200 ft from the bedroom window. Double paned windows even! She's...
I have a basket that I keep most of my newer ones in (within the last couple weeks) on the counter. But I do refrigerate some, as they keep longer. I don't wash them until I use them.
Mine lay in different spots all over the coop. One lays mostly in the nesting box, the other likes to lay on the floor by the door.
I put alfalfa hay in the nesting boxes, but they just move it to where they want to lay. Silly birds.
