Guess where my chicken laid her egg today...

So far I've seen my RIRs lay them out in the run, in the nesting box, and one under the perch, apparently dropped while they were asleep. Our injured one laid two in her dog crate, one of which was a soft-shell that she broke open and was happily chowing down on.

Chicken crisis averted for now...but could use some advice.

Yep, we took one to the vet and we verified that it wasn't the egg vent, both sores are off center to the right of it.

Chicken crisis averted for now...but could use some advice.

We noticed one of our RIRs getting harassed a couple of days ago, followed by blood on her backside. After getting her isolated we noticed a good-sized sore spot on her bottom. We've had her in the dog crate for a couple of days and was getting ready to return her, when we noticed a second RIR...

Needing advice! Thinking about letting our girls free range...

We've got an eight-foot fence running alongside the house with a six-foot gate at the front of the house...

    NORTHERN California!

Quote: I'm in Fremont, just south of Hayward. Alameda County regulations allow for up to six hens in residential areas, no roosters. Rural areas allow for roosters as well as more hens.

    will chickens eat ants?

We left out a couple of corn cobs last night for our ladies, they didn't finish cleaning them off before bed so they attracted a ton of ants overnight. Needless to say the hens had themselves a nice little ant feast this morning when they came out of the roost.

    Bay Area BYCers!

Quote: Wondering the same about mine. Put an orange in there, one of my RIR's pecked at it for a few minutes then ignored by all four. I put three zucchini slices in there the next day, pecked at, then ignored. The corncob I put in there however was picked clean in a day. Then the wifey threw...

    Bay Area BYCers!

Hi from Fremont! We just brought home our first pullets, a Plymouth Rock and three Rhode Island Reds. Having a blast just sitting around watching them scratch around and argue over the grass we drop in there.

    Hola from San Francisco

Hey everyone, Thought I'd introduce myself. We just brought home our first 14-week old pullets yesterday and this site came highly recommended by the breeder. We're pretty excited, we have one white Plymouth Rock (who appears to be in charge) and three Rhode Island Reds. They're settling in...
