Butchering the meat birds today & tomorrow.
Been a while- I forget:
1. What's the reason why we put the birds in an apple cider/ice water soak after butchering/plucking?
2. Someone just told me that we need to not freeze them until 24 hours later to let the rigor mortis "leaves" the body...
We have butchered our roosters in the past- but
We have never specifically received or purchased any meat birds. I guess bonus for us we have about 12 free whole chickens going in our freezer!
I'm just irritated that they specifically said they were leghorns whenever I called...
I placed my original order with the hatchery. They sent me the correct birds although seven of them died within the first few days. We need those specific birds for my daughters 4H project.
Then when I called them to let them know they were going to replace the birds that died from the original...

My son says she has always had scissor beak..however
She wasn't disqualified at showing.
She wants to peck badly..
She has never laid an egg-- ever.

Seller has never laid eggs.
Wonder if maybe they are much much older than...
we have given her the syringe feeding, which of course she balks at occasionally and has the energy to flip her beak away and
of course the junk goes everywhere lol...

Monday morning my son found our not quite 2 yr old
Spangled hamburg on the ground flopping.
We instantly thought predator attack, however no outward
Injuries & no other hen in our flock of 35+ had any signs of anything.
Upon closer look we found she had mites which we immediately...
