advice on my two new free rangers

If ya wanna make friends, and feed em up healthy... mix some plain full-fat yogurt with some Sunflower hearts and cracked corn.... they LOVE it, and they'll figure YOU are the provider of the treat, and get friendlier. AND it is a good pro-biotic, and the sunflower seeds very healthy!

    Keeping a rooster

I prefer the rooster, otherwise, usually a hen will become dominant-- stop laying, and even start to crow!! Besides-- if you are around them all the time, and hand feed em treats from a young age, even Roo's are nice! I have 11 that free range with 22 gals, no fights, and NEVER had a meanie!!!

2 new hens added, one is laying, the other????????

Try caging her in the coop at night and in the yard during the day-- they can interact without fighting AND she'll get the point that "THIS is home!"

is there such a thing as a nice rooster

We've got 11 Roo's right now, only 1 is a "problem Child"... and only with the other Roo's...not with people. Both of my Bantam Old English were THE sweetest birds we've ever owned...(other than our Silkie "Elvis" anyway) Unfortunately, both were accidentally killed this past Winter...one...

    How Long Do Introductions Take?

Your gal is just establishing that it is HER roost, and SHE is the boss-- it'll settle soon!

What is a good breed of rooster to watch over hens?

Silkie Roosters are very protective, yet gentle... make great protectors, as do Orphingtons, Barred Rocks etc... Hand raise it-- lots of attention, and agression will not be an issue!

    Finding a Home for Roosters

another option-- IF they are hand-raised and friendly, call your local 4-H... often there are kids who want to show birds but don't have one!!

ISA Browns and Corish Cross chicks......

2 weeks ago we decided to "thin the herd" so to speak.. and find homes for our younger Birds or any that really didn't "fit in" well, so we could then get some Marans or Wellsummers... Anyway-- they young Man came to pick up 10 hens and 2 Roo's... then hands me a box.... Inside were 20 ISA...

    Silkie people got a question

How long can you keep young roosters together before seperating them

We have 11 Roo's and 26 Hens, they are from 3 different batches of chicks, but all 1-2 years old-- no major fights-- an occasional squabble when a youngster tries getting uppity-- then our "Peacemaker" Elvis the Black Silke Steps in.. and all is back to Normal! We have only 1 Roo that is a...

Someone just gave me 20 ISA Brown Pullets (just starting to feather at the wingtips) I know they are dual-purpose, so are gonna sort em out by temperment over the next couple weeks-- keep 6 for Layers and fatten the rest for the freezer... HOWEVER: We've never raised any meaties before-- how...

Live in a Very Cold Winter area? Post link to your personal page here!

I've read many of the replies here.. but didn't see anything about "Igloo's"??? We have a Nigerian Dwarf goat in a 8 x 17 Dog kennel that has the roof tarped.... inside is a large "igloo" dog house that he has been sharing with my Silkie hen and roo. Normally, all our chickens are in a 14 x 16...

New Chicks, one with an issue...

We had all our eggs hatch since early Yesterday.... 3 died from hatching early.... Our last to hatch was "Shrink wrapped" pretty badly, even thought the humidity varied between 60% and 75%.... She seems to be doing ok-- VERY chatty too-- but the others are attacking her! Her grooming gland...
