Thank you. They were too crowded, especially since this bunch seems quite a bit more active than last year's batch. I have since moved the larger group into a large cardboard box (from a large gas grill). They are definitely better now with more space. I'll have to figure a way to put the...
I have 7 six-week-old chicks. A few days ago one of the chicks was pecked on her backside until bleeding. I separated her and put Blue Kote on her. The next day another chick was being pecked; so I put her with the other injured one.
Today I tried putting the less injured chick back with...
She's still here. She's still so small, although I think she may have grown ever so slightly. I separated her for about a day and a half, but she seemed so lonely; so I put her back in with the others. She was obviously much happier. She's eating and drinking and seems more steady on her...
I had to separate my sick chick from the others. But now I'm wondering if she's also lonely/depressed. I had her out of her box last night, sitting on my lap. I wasn't able to get her to take much of the electrolyte solution (although it looks like she drank quite a bit during the night)...
Well she's still here. The clicking has lessened. She's still sleeping most of the time, but we were able to get quite a bit of electrolyte solution into her yesterday evening. She was a little pasty again this morning but cleaned off pretty easily. She's not getting any worse, so I'm a...
I can now hear a clicking sound when she breathes. It may have been there before but I hadn't notice it. We just got her to take a little sip of electrolyte solution. We'll keep trying.
I added more shavings, and sure enough they dug down to the bottom. It is funny to watch. Their very first afternoon here on Saturday, they played chick football. I wish I had a video of that one.
The chicks just discovered they can move the shavings and find the bottom of the rubbermaid tote. They're just pecking away at the bottom. Is this OK? I'm going to add more shavings, but I think they're just going to scratch it away to get to the bottom. Thanks again.
Thank you. I have separated her. She has little unused spice jar caps with her food and a little sugar water. She has taken a little sugar water from my finger. I don't hear any breathing sounds and her eyes and nose are not watering. I guess we'll just keep babying her. I really hope...
One of my BOs has been pretty lethargic since yesterday. She sleeps a lot, usually while standing up. She did have a little pasty butt this morning (I think that's what it was), so I cleaned her off. I just tried giving her a little sugar water. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
We've only had ours a few hours. We've picked names but will wait to assign them till we can tell them apart. The names we picked were: Esther, Lucille (Lucy) , Beatrice (Bea) - our RIRs; Agnes, Lois, Rita - our Barred Rocks; Mildred (Millie) and Evelyn (Evie) - our Buff Orpingtons.
Just picked up our new chicks today - 3 RI Reds, 3 Barred Rocks, 2 Buff Orpingtons. They are in a clear plastic tote with the heat lamp on one side. They move all around the tote but tend to gather right in the middle. Am I correct to assume that the temperature must be about right for them...
