wonderful article! my americauna, Clarice, is 9 years old. she laid prolifically for the first 6 years and slowed down a bit for the next two. she was laying 1 or 2 a week for the first half of this year, but i think she's done. :) she's a joy to be around and still loving life in the run...
just a caveat, though, to do your breed research....we got a golden wyandotte because of her gorgeous coloring and raised her from a pullet, but she turned out to be hell on wheels and bullied our other hens unmercifully....'finally gave her back to the farm we got her from and restored peace to...
our chicks lay the best tasting eggs....happy chickens equal better eggs than industrialized farm eggs...the yolks are richer, the whites thicker....'can't beat 'em....:) (and we don't wash the bloom off...)
i finally gave up and re-homed my golden wyandotte, who bullied my other 4 hens something fierce.....'felt bad for her sake, as she's probably not getting treats every day...:).....but it is so peaceful in the run and coop now....i think it worked out for all of us and i know goldie is just fine....
yeah, i guess i didn't do my breed research when i chose a golden wyandotte for the flock.....beautiful bird, but a miserable bully.....'had to get rid of her and now my little flock is happy again....:)
i'm not fond of fancy, poofy looking chickens (don't know all the different breeds)....i did buy a golden wyandotte because they are beautiful birds, but she was a terrible bully and i gave her back...my americauna is my favorite, as she's smart as a whip ... i also have a welsummer, a cuckoo...
we only got chickens for the first time about a month ago and they are all only about 4 months old...we noticed that the light brahma had come up lame after about two weeks and figured she had injured her leg coming out of the coop....a week after that one morning she couldn't stand at all. She...
