    WHAT killed my chickens???

Florida and Texas - that explains a lot. I have a perfectly secure coop. I also let my hens free-range. I take good care of them and enjoy them. They are my pets. I love them. But... there are chicken predators. True, I'm not a farmer. Nor is lazy L a farmer. I'm sure he doesn't free-range...

    WHAT killed my chickens???

With all due respect, Mr L, your comment is not particularly helpful. Perhaps you would care to enlighten us on what exactly would provide a safe environment for chickens.

    WHAT killed my chickens???

Found my little bantam Ruby on top of the coop with her head missing. I don't know what killed her but I suspect she flew into a tree and maybe it was a raccoon. I know they're out there, because when it snowed there were raccoon tracks everywhere. Raccoons are everywhere, anyway. I am really...

    Silkie thread!

I took this picture of Emma Lou while cleaning up the henhouse during our recent snowstorm. You can see Josie in the background, trying to get into the picture. She laid her first egg during the snowstorm! It looked like a rock. Hard shell too. Inside a very large yolk. Didn't eat it, of course.

    Hope it's a Hen what's the Breed ?

Man that little Almond is one beautiful little hen. I found this thread while trying to figure out what breed Josie is. Josie might be a Black Tailed Buff Japanese Bantam or an Old English Game Hen. She's at the bottom of the pecking order because she's the littlest bantam (of four) that I...

What kind of Bantam Hen is Josie?

Wow. Great pic of Black Tailed Buff Japanese Bantam right on this site. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/839213/hope-its-a-hen-whats-the-breed now thinking Josie's ruff makes her look more like the BTBJ... To add to the complication, chickens can cross breed like very other animal. Not...

    four bantams in the city

Yeah, couple friends now call me the chicken whisperer! I can only thank the people in a documentary I watched, that changed my whole outlook on animals. It is well worth the time... it's amazing.

    Hawks :(

I'm so sorry for your loss... I was outside twice when a large hawk tried to get at my hens. The first time he dive-bombed one of them I saw it, screamed obscenities (not very lady-like) at the hawk and he flew off. The second time, I watched as the hens all suddenly went still as stone...

What kind of Bantam Hen is Josie?

Thank you! From the pictures (especially the second one posted by Perfect Polish) I would say OEGB. I checked online for pictures of Black Tailed Puff Japanese but couldn't find one that looked real similar to Josie, even tho I realize characteristics vary in identical breeds. I really...

What kind of Bantam Hen is Josie?

Josie is a bantam hen. She is on the small side, even for a bantam. When she first arrived she seemed to think she would be the queen and was quickly taken down a few pegs by the other three bantams. Now she's at the bottom of the pecking order, and seems kind of nervous.

How to Break a Broody Hen

Thank you for sharing MC! I had an easy solution, which you guys are going to think I'm a dork for not thinking of earlier - which was to take the fake egg off the nest. I might have to try something else if she goes back into the broody phase but right now she seems like she's over brooding...

    four bantams in the city

Thanks for the welcome! Quick story. I know there's a natural pecking order that is going to exist. But for several weeks after getting the new hens, the little red hen was really being thrown out of the flock. They were so mad at her, and it is true she was somewhat of a control freak at...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Thanks for your input. I just have a chicken coop in my city backyard. The hens run free in the backyard during the day. I have to keep the coop door open though in case they get scared of anything (like hawks...) I am going to put Ruby out with the other chickens today though and just see...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Were you able to break her habit from taking her from the nest or did you have to use the wire thing? Just wondering.

    four bantams in the city

I inherited two bantams from my daughter when she moved out of my house and I moved back. Maude died when a dog dug through the fence and got her. I then bought three more and introduced them to the older hen. Three are under a year old. I have Dottie (the oldest one, from my daughter - a...
