Hey Everyone!
Here's the end of the story:
We kept her in our extra bathroom for 3 months and one week. Our winter weather let up long enough that we could get her back out several hours a day under supervision with the rest of the flock (3 other hens).
There were some initial pecking...
Well, we're coming up on 3 months recuperation. She's ready to go outside - seems healthy and active. We let her out as often as we can for supervised visits with the rest of the flock.
Being new to hens, I never really put too much stock in pecking order. But now, we need to - because the...
Hello all,
We have a 9 month old hen who has been a good layer - the last several days, she's become lethargic, and developed white diarrhea.
The other two hens in the same coop are healthy, active and "normal".
Any thoughts?
Wow!
We think she's on the road to recovery. Still probably several weeks before the wounds are healed, but still no signs of infection.
She's anxious to go outside, and does go out for supervised visits. The other 3 will peck her if not supervised, but we're going to keep getting her...
Started eggs and buttermilk a few days ago. COULDN'T believe my eyes. Didn't think it was possible, but she nearly LICKS the bowl clean.
Stronger every day.
Still hoping and praying for the wounds to heal. No infection, but these are big wounds that are healing.
Thanks everyone for the...
I may have been a little hasty in trying to get her to eat and "bulk up."
Today, she seems very uncomfortable with the size of her crop, and is trying to adjust it. It doesn't seem to be able to process as much as she's eaten. She's also not drinking enough... we think.
When I am able to get...
Great reminder. We'll do scrambled eggs, and we did yogurt for the first two weeks, but she REALLY protests the yogurt now that she's feeling stronger.
It's a struggle to get the vitamins into her. She puts up a good fight if we try to put ANYTHING in via dropper or syringe.
May I ask what...
Some of y'all have been following the other post of Hen recovering from Dog Bite .
Well, she's not out of the woods yet, but all indication is that she's heading in the right direction, and needs time to heal.
We've allowed her out (supervised, of course) a few times, and want to help her heal...
!!! Y A Y !!!
After a tough feeding session last night where she resisted everything I did, I pointed out to her that she did have a food bowl with pulverized grain, seeds, etc.
S H E G O T H E R P E C K - F O R - F O O D B A C K ! ! !
She's pecking vigorously, and having decent...
I wish I knew how to read her behavior. Thursday, she spent more of the day sitting (rather than standing) but her "resistance" when feeding her is definitely stronger, and she's showing more interest in "peck" feeding her self.
However when she feeds herself, she doesn't seem to be too...
Never heard of "vet wrap." Is that something that's available at pet shop? Vet clinic? ????...
Thought of Hydrocortisone cream... any dangers here?
Thanks all for the support. Emotions vary widely in this situation. Every day brings new hope... and sometimes new challenges.
Progress continues, but with the progress comes some problems.
Initially, she could not stretch out her neck long enough to be able to scratch her head with her feet. Now that she's feeling stronger, and better (we presume) she's able to scratch head, and just beneath her ears and behind her...
From another thread on the forum, it seems that 3drops morning and 3 drops evening is the recommended dose.
She really doesn't like the taste, so I let her chase it with a couple of meal worms and a sip of water.
I started the vitamins last night, and (maybe I just want to see progress) she...
I'll get some Polyvisol today. (Without iron.) She's a full size hen. What dose of the vitamins?
We used a walgreens brand of antiseptic skin glue.
Thanks everyone for your support. This is really stressful.
Just gave the hen another epsom salt bath. She seems to LOVE them, and relaxes during and after.
During the bath, we discovered ANOTHER wound. Did not appear infected, but still we're wondering if what we're doing is humane. We irrigated it with the epsom salt for some time, and "glopped"...
