I am dreaming and planning about having my own chicken coop

I don't have answers to all of your questions, but welcome! I know for our family it was a lot of reading, then a lot of trial and error to figure out what worked best for our family and our chickens. I think the internet has tons of resources (especially BYC!) where you can learn about chickens...

Does THIS happen to anyone else???

Can the chickens land on the edge of the feeder anywhere and maybe knock it over? Is it steady enough to stay upright if one of them lands on it, I mean. Otherwise, I would be inclined to guess something big enough to pull on it and knock the feed everywhere- raccoon, maybe?

    Hens haven't started laying...34 weeks

Hmmmm.... If they free range, my guess is they're hiding eggs from you. Easy fix- pen them up for a week and encourage them to lay in the nest boxes by adding a couple golf balls in them. Once they get the hang of it, go back to free ranging them and they'll probably head to the nest boxes when...

    Black wattles

I've never heard of this- I'm hoping someone with more experience will come along! My first thought would be necrosis too- especially if it's winter where you are and there's potential for frost bite? Otherwise I have no idea. How is the bird acting besides the wattle color...

    Chicken limping badly

Hi aa89! Have you seen any improvement since you've put him on "box rest"? If you don't see/feel anything structurally and it's only effecting one leg, my initial thought would be a pulled muscle? I'm certainly not an expert and maybe someone else will have a better idea, but I think give him a...

    Chick with leg issues....

That last pic is hard to see, but those are all his toes curled under him in a sitting position.

    Chick with leg issues....

So, yesterday when out in the coop, I noticed one of our 8 babies (2 1/2 weeks old) was walking a little funny and seemed to have trouble keeping up with mama & everyone else. Was doing more hopping than walking, but seemed energetic, so I didn't want to mess with him (plus mama is VERY...

3wk old salmon fav. chick seems weak

Thank you for answering, jensownzoo. The electrolytes were sort of me panicking and figuring it couldn't hurt! Is there a difference in boiling vs scrambling an egg for the chicks? I would skip the usual milk for a scrambled snack/boost- just wondering!

3wk old salmon fav. chick seems weak

So, we have five vaccinated babies of various breeds. Within a few days of getting them home, we noticed one chick had a standing up resting position of one wing being kept lower than the other. What I mean is, if she's not actively moving around, one wing seems to slip down a bit lower. When...

    Where can I get chicks?

Check out Craigslist! Our very first set of chicks were from someone local who hatched more chicks than she needed. It was a really easy transaction, no waiting on shipping, etc. also, I voted for cochins in your poll- they are by far the sweetest birds we've ever had. Seemed friendly right...

    After the egg is hatched

We have had good luck in the past with just sectioning off a corner of the coop (with chicken wire or something similar) for the mama and babies, so the little ones have constant access to appropriate food and water, then open up the partition as the baby is big enough to hang with everyone. If...

New baby- haven't seen it drink?

Thank you two! I would have thought she would have picked right up on it when she saw the others, but so far, no luck! I'll just keep an eye on her and maybe try a few more times tonight/tomorrow if she still hasn't figured it out. Thanks again

New baby- haven't seen it drink?

Hi all! Thanks for taking the time to help me out! Five chicks arrived this morning via USPS and MPC. Brooder box is on my deck and has been up and running for two days to be sure we had the temperature right with the heat lamp. When I got them home, I dutifully dipped each of their beaks in the...
