I'm guessing they weren't acting like boys since there were no girls around. No reason to fight or crow, I suppose. If there'd just been one hen I'm sure we would have known much, much sooner. But these boys just went around in a happy trio. Peaceful and quiet and mellow.
There...
What I can't understand is how I didn't know until they were 7 months old. No crowing at all from any of the 3 of them until 7 months?! Does that surprise anyone else? And, really, no fighting or aggression at ALL.
And we thought there were no eggs due to the PNW darkness.
We're done for now.
We had a variety of neighbor issues. The crowing 'hens' sort of pushed us over the edge.
My husband is a math teacher. We figure he can write a good story problem about the probability of all three hens actually being roosters.
My three buff hens are all Hanks. How on earth did I not know this sooner?
Do roosters not behave in rooster-ish ways if there are no hens present?
They are 28 weeks old.
Just started some very strangled pathetic crowing at sunrise 3 days ago.
Hardly a peep out of them before then. And...
WHAT!?!
They've hardly made a peep until two or three days ago? Is that possible? They don't fight, didn't make noise until 7 months old!
They make little nests and sit in them.
Any other opinions?
Would it be possible for a rooster to never crow until 28 weeks of age?
I have three chickens that I thought were hens. They all look the same -- same size, feathers, behavior. No big tail feathers, no huge combs or wattles.
The other day at dawn, 2 of them started a garbled, choked...

The coop and covered run are about 20 square feet total. The coop, run and birds are all in great shape, but the girls have got to go due to...
Well, as if the early rising phenomena weren't enough, today ONE OF MY HENS CROWED AT DAWN.
This is NOT what I need with my chicken-averse neighbor.
I'm CERTAIN she is a hen -- looks almost identical to the other 2 buffs her age. It was sort of a pathetic crow-ish crow, but there was no...
This morning around 5:00 -- still completely dark-- my husband saw the girls up and about out in the run. (Yes, the run is fully enclosed and as critter-proof as we can get it...) Our coop/run is not lit. The sun doesn't come up lately until around 7:00.
I thought they were night blind. How...
We're new chicken lovers here in the PNW, too. Raccoon country!
We have big, fat urban raccoons in our neighborhood. We've seen 'em in the trees, under our deck, crossing streets at night, and find their footprints every time it snows. So, the girls are in the run, most of the time. I've...
I think we've done a good job with the raccoon-proofing. I know it's not perfect, but we've got the 16 inches of buried hardware cloth and good latches. They'd have to rip off the hardware cloth to get in, and that stuff is on there tight.
I'd still do a door at night if it's necessary...
