i had 4 laying hens all 2-3 years old. Three of the. Stopped laying last fall. One has continued to lay. The three who stopped laying have all died in the last 5 weeks. No signs or symptoms. Just dead in the morning. I have bought new chicks to replace the dead birds, but I am wondering if...

    Sick Hen(s)

I have four 2-year old hens. They have all been good layers. Since last fall only one hen is laying. Three have not laid a single egg since October. One hen (RIR, or production red) is visibly ill. She waddles and moves slowly. She has been this way for a number of months. She has bright green...

    Shell-less eggs layed at night

For the past two nights one of my three hens has layed eggs with a soft rubber like shell. This has happened while on the roost around 11pm. She is 8 months old. My other two hens are laying normally. Otherwise she appears happy and normal. They are eating 20% protein layer pellets. We...

    Cold(ish)

3 hens - 9 months old. The coop is 4'x4' plus two egg boxes. The run is 4'x8'. There is ventilation on all four sides. Probably 6 square feet of total ventilation. All the birds use the egg boxes to lay. My production red roosts in the coop every night. All three roosted in the coop...

What is the most practical way to keep laying hens for eggs but also end up with some baby chick to?

I would skip on the roosters. The money you will save by not needing to feed roosters can be spent on new chicks each spring.

    Cold(ish)

My hens have a run attached to their house. They rarely use the house at night. They prefer to roost in the run. Now that it's greeting colder a night, should I put them in their house? Or let them choose where to roost?

How long to get over being Broody?

I have three hens. They were all laying everyday with the occasional skipped day. One month ago my Easter Egger started going broody. I kicked her out of the hen house and within two days she was over being broody. She rejoined the other hens and was not fixated on the nest box. I thought...

    Sick chicken?

Is it possible that she is broody? From my reading she has the signs. Puffed up and cackling. She spreads her wings why puffing up. I took her from the nest box and she rejoined the other hens, but soon she was in te nest again. I had golf balls in the nest, and I remove her eggs everyday...

    Sick chicken?

My production red hen started laying 3 weeks ago. She has layed every day. She laid an egg around noon today. This evening she went back to the nest box and is making her egg sounds. It is well after dark and the other hens are on the roost, and she is still in the nest. I am new to chicken...

    Aggressive Pullet

As it turns out she is not laying yet. Our production red is the one doing the work! Either way, we are happy with the first egg. 3 eggs in 3 days. The Barred Rock has calmed down. I have been more dominant to her and she has responded.

First Egg. But who laid it?

That's what we are thinking because we found her in the coup looking at it from afar. The others were in the yard.
