    ReAcclimating into flock

I would like to reacclimate both my injured (but healing) chicken, and my shy chicken back into the flock. But so far attempts have failed. Both of these lady birds were part of the flock since they hatched. They also became the lowest on the totem pole in the flock over time. It seemed as...

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

It won’t matter if it is a hawk or not. We have had red and black headed vulchers that have circled above, of which two of the black headed vulchers attacked my chickens last year. Hawks, vulchers, eagles, owls. They all will circle and hone in closer and closer if they think they can get an...

    middle-aged newbie

You are doing what I did. Reading everything I could prior to buying the chickens. I even started picking up the chicken magazine at the farm goods store. I figured since the house came with a coop, why not give it a shot. After reading encouraging posts from here, I jumped in. 1 yr in and I...

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

I haven’t tried anything like that. It’s nice to know something can help. Thank you

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

Out here everyone knows it is illegal, but they also would shoot the raptor and leave it out for the vulchers. Nothing left - not even bones. I had my hen mauled, and I wouldn’t let my better half shoot the hawk. Up close it was a beautiful bird.

The meds I spray on her cleans it out, keeps it moist, and seems to be helping her out. She presently seems happy when I spend visiting hours with her.

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

I’m sorry you have to go through this. We have 8 acres, wooded, alongside our coop. The hawks and coons are horrible. Our 2 pens are fortress’s as well and recently a red shouldered hawk attacked one of my girls while out in their chicken yard. I have used CD’s along rooftops of pens. Also...

Don't tell the wife, I'm growing fodder in the 2nd bathroom!

Oh, honey I thought this is what you were suggesting in your response to them in the garage. I’m so great full to have a wife that understands the need to put them indoors ☺️

Rooster can’t balance or walk, sudden onest

We assumed our hen was afflicted with a neurological defect. She was tilting, losing her balance, walking backwards in circles, and falling over. I hand fed her. I Gave probiotics in her water with a dropper, and held her to comfort her. She is a miracle bird. It just disappeared.

Mauled chicken - broken wing bone, skin gone muscle exposed

Ahhhhh, thank you. I do allow them to spend an hour outside the cages each time I tend to Retta. They also seem to know when time is up because they are no longer fretting when times up. Thank you for your kind words.

Mauled chicken - broken wing bone, skin gone muscle exposed

I’ve had 2 chickens that were tormented by each other. Then the rest followed in. The two ended up with peck wounds to the bone. Oddly they were hidden by the wing and it wasn’t until the white birds were turning pink did I realize there was a problem. Anyhow being just months in to owning...

Rooster can’t balance or walk, sudden onest

Sorry I can’t help. I just wanted to say I’m sorry this is happening. I had a chicken go through this for several weeks. Then it just disappeared. She has been normal since. I have no clue what was wrong and I felt helpless. I hope you little guy is ok. I pray it goes away as easy as it came.

Mauled chicken - broken wing bone, skin gone muscle exposed

Vetricyn is exactly what I’ve been using and seems to work better than the ointment. I’m no longer confining the legs now that she can stand and stabilize herself. Keeping her friend with her has been beneficial. Both walk around the basement after each cleaning, and rewrapping. She seems to be...

Mauled chicken - broken wing bone, skin gone muscle exposed

This is sad to hear. She seems to be doing so well today. Yes, my concern is she could get underlying condition because her wounds are so deep. The exposed bone and muscle really worries me the most. I will continue to wrap her. She is eating, drinking, and pottying ok. Maybe she will be a...

Thank you. I do hope that the spray continues to do so well. I don’t think I can do an amputation. Not unless Ive seen how it’s done. I would hate to damage her more. Her screaming would break me.
