Well, the only problem with moving the babies right now is that the big girls do a lot of free ranging and when they're not free ranging they're in an enclosed area that is not covered...we have a lot of hawks and a hawk actually got one of our babies before we got around to covering the baby...
Ok, this is our first time raising chicks with a broody. We hatched 5 babies the first week of June so our babies are 5-6 weeks now. We lost 1 baby to a hawk due to me being too slow to put a cover on their run :( Anyways, the mama is still with them and though I thought she would only nurture...
Thanks for the reply! Yeah, we don't wash or refrigerate our eggs either but temps usually don't get above 90 here so I just wasn't sure if they were too hot under the broody hen. Might try the putting them in water and seeing if they float test just to be sure :) Thanks again!
We have a broody hen and no rooster so we got some fertile eggs from a neighbor to put under her. She had 6 non fertile eggs that had been under her for 2-3 days, are these still edible or did they get too hot? TIA!
I think I may go with the idea of putting FF in for the broody and throwing it to the others every day. I feel like since she's already not eating much than she would get more out of the fermented feed then she would dry. We'll see, this is my first time hatching eggs so I'm learning a lot! :)...
Hi Stephanie,
I recognize your user name from the glutenzap forums :) Glad to see you over here! It's frustrating how many people don't believe that you can be sensitive to eggs from hens fed gluten grains but me and my girls definitely do! We were egg free for a long time because of reactions...
Thanks to everyone that answered me on where to keep the feed! Mine doesn't smell bad either the strainer was just attracting some fruit flies so I just decided to keep the strainer out in the garage next to the dry feed. Easy fix :)
Another question. We have a broody hen and I'm planning on...
THis may have already been discussed but I don't have time right now to read through all the previous comments...where do you keep your fermented feed? Kitchen, garage, etc? I've been keeping mine in the kitchen but it's getting a little messy so I was thinking about moving it to the garage but...
Hi, I am new to fermented feed. I've been feeding it now for maybe a week or so. I just started with layer mash and water and it seems to be fermenting just fine, I've been keeping it in a five gallon bucket in my kitchen since it's pretty chilly outside right now. I've kept some dry feed out...
We have been getting feed from our local feed mill. It's just corn and soy based, not ideal but we don't seem to react to the eggs unless we eat a ton at one sitting (mild soy intolerance probably). Before we switched we were using a wheat based feed, my girls had stopped wanting eggs all...
Well, we finally found the feathers in our neighbors yard. No carcass just a bunch of feathers. At least now I won't be waiting around for her to show back up. Probably coyote or dog :(
We typically free range our chickens unless we're going to be gone for an extended period of time. Last night I went to lock up our coop and one of our girls was missing (Full size austrolorp). I've walked around our yard (about 2 acres) and no sign of feathers, carcass, or anything. My neighbor...
