It's got to be the heat. I'm in the foothills, and when it gets over 80 here it's too hot!! My production is down right now too, but I have 3 that have gone broody. Maybe the heat is bringing out the broody?
Thank you both! I'm in the process of fixing the drainage issue. I live on the side of the mountain, so runoff from rains has pooled under the coop. The walls are in good shape, and from what I can see the floor joists are too. We used pressure treated lumber under the coop. I'm adding...
I started my chores this morning by stepping through the floor of my coop. The coop is 8 years old, and years of rain, snow, and dirt running down the hillside has caused the floor to rot. We live on the side on the mountain, so everything runs down hill. I'm trying to decide what I want to do...
I've started raising Delawares for egg purposes only. They've been really great layers for me. I'm still hunting for the perfect broiler. I don't mind they hanging around for a little while longer. I had a couple of Brahma roosters once that were around for at least 5 months, those were...
I have a purebred Great Pyrenees whose parents protected goats and a 1/2 pyr, 1/2 Bernese Mountain dog who was raised with goats. I got both dogs to guard my goats. I've bred the 2 because LGD pups are hard to find in my area, and I've had a lot of interest from other livestock owners. The...
Wow! I never realized that salty milk had anything to do with mastitis. I'll definitely check. Baby is very active and healthy. He likes to climb on my back and nibble my hair when I'm out feeding everyone. Your advice was just what I needed! Thank you so much.
My Nigerian Dwarf doe kidded October 2. I have been trying to milk her once a day because she only had 1 kid. The last few days, I've been getting about and ounce out of her at a milking. It also seems like she is trying to keep her buckling off of her. I have tried to put him on her, he's...
Thanks for the advice! I've started raising Nigerian Dwarf goats and love them. They give just enough milk for my family and the milk tastes delicious. I had LaManchas for a while, but I like the smaller breeds. I can transport them easily, and they have great personalities. I have 4 does...
I have 4, 4 week old ducklings inside right now under a heat lamp. They are starting to feather in nicely. Right now the daytime temps are in the 60s and 70s and the nighttime temps are in the 40s. Can I move them out to the coop without a heat lamp? My coop is insulated and I have my older...
Congratulations to all of the 6 year award recipients!! I woke up to the email this morning!! I can't believe it's been 6 years since I started on this crazy poultry ride. I wouldn't change it for a thing. There have been a lot of changes to our flock over the past 6 years, but I've loved...
I'm surrently brooding 2 Magpie and @ Khaki Campbell ducklings. They're 2 weeks old. I have pine shaving in their brooder, but it's turning into a a nasty mess. What else can I put in their brooder for bedding?
Thanks for the help!!

Hi,
I'm looking for 2 Cochin pullets. I'm live in the foothills outside of Denver, but I am willing to travel to pick them up. Please PM me if you have any available!
Thanks, Sonja
That's interesting with 15% being OK? I've had chicken friends tell me they should be on 18%. Come to think about it, most commercial crumble feeds are 16%. I really appreciate all of the advice. It's helped to make my decision!

Thank you for all the suggestions. I didn't ask about a starter. I'm heading to the feed store today, so I'll have to see if they can order the starter too. My son recently did n assignment about corn in our food. It was amazing to see how many things he couldn't eat to go corn free for a...
I've recently found an organic, corn free, soy free layer feed. The only problem is it's only 15% protein. How can I add more protein to the feed? I'd like to go corn free, but 15% seems way too low.
Thanks, Sonja
