Hi Teila,
No problem, my first thought was mites/lice as well. Thats why I took her out and gave did a thorough check under the wings, neck chest where she scratched. The other chickens are perfectly fine. I just checked their roosts with a tissue and it came up clean. I have treated their...
during the day she doesn't seem unwell. I have to take a closer look tomorrow but I thought I did and was surprised how normal she seemed. This is the second night I've found her do that. She might've done it for longer and I didn't know about it.
During the day she's up and about. The moment she gets in for the night she starts that scratching thing and I took her out just now (after dark). She also doesn't sleep up on the roost anymore but would lay anywhere on the floor inside the coop. With not strong at all I meant that when I held...
one of my chickens behaving normal during the day. When night time comes inside it's coop it starts making "scratching movements on its chest area. It'd walk backwards doing this until it topples over backwards. I took it out just now and there was no resistance at all, I could lay it on its...
Hi Steighcie,
It has now been three years since we have chicken and the only incident was a possum in the coop that was terrified because he didn't know the way out but he did not touch the chickens. The real challenge is the squirrels that are able to get inside the coop and eat the chicken...
So, I got four chicken four days ago and we live in southern California where it's still pleasantly sunny. The chickens spend all day in the coop other than coming out maybe once for food and maybe, maybe another time for a treat if I hold it under their beaks long enough?! They're about 7-8...
alright.. thanks Kelsie for the website, I have to take a closer look at the bugs and compare them, thanks to you both! I want to make sure they aren't mites or something.
I looked at my chicken feed after two months and found tons of little black (easy squeezable about the size of - that little line) bugs in there, even though I kept it covered in a plastic container. Now I'm not sure if I can still feed it to the chickens or if I have to get rid of it, any...
same here, it was the first time it happend to ours.. She was in there for days and I thought she was hurt. Actually she was yesterday one of her toes was bleeding when I lifted her out. After seeing that I washed the nesting box and left it out for the day. She was forced to sleep on the roost...
I read about the "putting fertile eggs down for her" but I can't do that at this point.. the timing is really not right. I usually take her out, once or twice a day and she'd be out for a while :-) Well at least she isn't sick then I was worried that we did something wrong !!
Since about 5-6 days now one of my four chicken would sit in the nesting box ALL DAY LONG if we wouldn't lift her out of it, several times a day, everyday!! I thought someone might have an idea what could be the matter? She doesn't peck us when we lift her out and once she's out she's fine...
