Pre drill a pilot hole about the same size as the screw you are going to use. A #6 x1 1/2" sheet metal screw works just fine then the rail won't split.
My rails are 3/4 x 1 with a 3/16 inch wide groove cut 1/2 in deep. They could be cut from most any size, I just used a 3/4 x 1 stock.
My door is just under 1/16" thick . The 3/16" groove allows free movement, I have approx 1/8" gap between door edge and groove bottom (with door pushed tight to...
The speed sign is great for 2 reasons, won't warp and heavy enough to work well. If you don't have access to a table saw find someone that does or perhaps a cabinet shop. Use two strips (or one long one and cut it in half after the groove is cut into it). I recommend using hardwood as it would...
I have great success with the door shown. Works just great. The coop is solar powered operates on a timer so is completely operator free. The door opens at 6am and closes at 8pm so I don't have to worry or even be home. You will notice a locking mechanism because my chicks free range which...
I installed the vertical type door on mine with the D20 motor to open/close the door. It works just wonderful as I made it solar powered so it is worry free and fully automatic. It also has a locking unit because they free-range and predators have access to the door at night.
I don't know what you have heard about the D20 but mine works perfectly. It is DC ( 12volt) but comes with a plug in transformer for regular house current. Mine has been in operation for over 2 months now without a single issue. I used the transformer while assembling the rest of the items to...
Will free range chicks lay their eggs in the nesting boxes in the coop or will they lay them out away from the coop. I'm looking ahead as they should start laying in a few months. They have the run of the yard and have no problem going into the coop before the door closes. On a side note...
Here's the pics.
I live in a rural area and subject to varmites and plan to let the chickens free range. Therefore needed a lock to prevent door from being opened from the outside. As you can see when lifted the locking pin retracts from the side rail and allows the door to open and the reverse...
