    July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Over 50% sounds pretty good to me! I just ordered the hatchery choice and was really pleased with what I got; Lavender/Black split Orpington, Light Brahma, Blue Andalusian, Patridge Cochin, Easter Egger and a White Cochin.

    July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

I haven't, I am not experienced with candling. I haven't touched the eggs since I put them in with her. I did let them rest for 24 hours after picking them up from the post office. I got them from Meyer Hatchery and they were packaged very well. I know hatch rates are not great with shipped...

I am watching your progress junior67, I put 6 shipped eggs under my broody hen the same day you started your eggs. Fingers crossed for both of us!

    Broody hen, Texas heat

Yea, I think that is all we can do. Everytime I check on my girl, her name is Rose, she is on the eggs. I am hoping she gets a hatch, I'm worried that this heat has killed the eggs. I will let you know if we get any chicks. I'm rooting for your hen and praying for a break in this heat!!!

    Broody hen, Texas heat

I saw your reply on my post and thought I would reply on your post. I feel your pain, I worry about my girl every day, can't believe she is getting through this heat! I did prop open the nesting box door a little to help with ventilation, not sure if it is helping much. We got up to 108 degrees...

Texas heat and a broody hen

Thank you for the replies! I did prop the nesting box door open a Crack today, hoping to help ventilation. This is her second time hatching so she does have some experience. I was thinking of adding a fan but was afraid it would spook her off the eggs, but I'm thinking it's worth a try. Sure...

Texas heat and a broody hen

I live in Texas and the heat has been exceptionally brutal this summer, 100+ degrees every day. I have a broody hen on her 11th day of setting and I am starting to really worry about her in this heat. She is panting, full beak open panting. I normally never interfere with a broody and let her do...

    6 mystery chicks

    Gender and Breed?

I think they are both pullets. I have a rir and white leghorn close to that age and they look just like yours.

    6 mystery chicks

Yes I have 6 other hens and five more coming next week. I had the opportunity to get some free chicks and thought that might be fun, bad luck to end up with five out of six to be roosters though. They will go to freezer camp with our meat chickens when we butcher.

    6 mystery chicks

They are 8 weeks old. And none of them have feathered legs.

    6 mystery chicks

Thank you, I also felt the first five were all roosters, was really hoping the sixth one was a hen because I love her so much! Easter Egger makes sense, just hadn’t thought of it. The first one’s beak is all there, just the tip is light colored and is hard to see in that pic.

    6 mystery chicks

I received 6 free day old chicks from a friend of a friend. When I asked the very sweet lady that giving them to me, what breeds they were, she said “oh honey I don’t know what breeds any of my chickens are!” Lol! I did not see any of her hens. I am sure they are all barnyard mixes. First...
