Hello. An area of my yard has been covered in lead paint chips from an old door that was left out. I've tried to pick out as many as I can, but many have already broken down and mixed with the soil. Is this level of lead dangerous to my birds? How does one go about removing contaminated soil?
Did that spray work? It seems the main taste ingredient is the pepper, but I once accidently added three times the correct amount of pepper to Cajun grits. They were so hot no one could eat them, but I gave 'em to the chooks and they gobbled them up. Spicy things just don't seem to bother them.
The raccoons have luckily not come back yet. I've been locking up the chickens at night, and they've been fine. I can't call normal animal controllers because the 'coons don't live on my property. If I catch one, the city has agreed to remove it. If they go back on that promise, I'll drown the...
So they're designed to shut very tight with one padlock, and I found that when I forced it into shaped to get the lock on it held the shape despite the warping. I piled bricks over the hole, patched up all gaps I found in the fence, piled rocks where the fence what not fully buried, and put out...
How far underground should the wire go? Also, I can't replace the wire for a few days. Do you think locking the coop at night will keep the chickens safe for the time being?
Okay, I'll try that. How about the inner coop? It's one of these:
All plastic, with a place for a padlock. Doors are pretty badly warped. Has one hole in it from a heat-lamp accident.
Hello. I've kept chickens in Brooklyn for 11 years, and today for the first time ever I saw two raccoons in the chicken coop, trying to catch the chickens. My father heard them and chased off the 'coons, but now I need to raccoon proof their house. The fence is re-bar with chicken wire, closed...
So I increased the ratio of pellets and started giving them their oyster calcium supplement, and bam! Feathers back just in time for the cold. Thanks for the help!
The problem is, only one of the hens has the white spots and the little bits of brush at the end of the stems. The other one has lost the feathers and the stems on her neck, and has been that way for a month.
