The 1"x2" serves well as a primary run fencing (6ft), Easy to attach the 24"/36"/48" -.5" hardware cloth to lower portion of run fencing
We have 1.5'x2' windows on three sides of coop, 2"x4" frames, and .5" hardware cloth - attached with wood screws over washers to both outside and inside of frames. The window covers are 1" Spar Varnished plywood that can be screwed down tight during worst of winter and in the warmer months can be propped wide open with Osage Orange and/or Cedar "posts". Coon/opossum futzs with outer screen-post slips and down slams the window cover on the varmint (quarter speed dead fall - improvise as one sees fit...).

Just to reiterate: If in the market for welded wire fencing/hardware cloth - call around for nearest retailer, in reasonable driving distance, that will sell by the ft./yd. Even if one has to buy a minimum, it's still much cheaper than eating cost of 100ft. when one only needs 10ft. for a specific "fix"/improvement.

The raccoons have luckily not come back yet. I've been locking up the chickens at night, and they've been fine. I can't call normal animal controllers because the 'coons don't live on my property. If I catch one, the city has agreed to remove it. If they go back on that promise, I'll drown the ******* (I love animals, but not ones that try to kill my girls). Discharging a gun, even on private property, is illegal where I live, so I figure the wire and trap are my best bet. What should I do about ventilating the inner chicken house? I've had three generations live in there for 10+ years, all perfectly healthy except one coccidian outbreak and one surviving Marek's disease.

I had to smile reading your post. Normally, I am a big animal lover and wouldn't kill a thing, except rats, snakes and bugs. But if it means protecting my own pets, it's a different story. I know some people may read your post and think of it as cruel, but whatever works when it comes to keeping the coop safe from predators.

Has anyone ever made a kill box. I had great luck dispatching a large racoon with my .177 caliber Gamo with one shot, but have had to use more than one for a couple of opossums. How quick is the death with a kill box?
