    keeping chicken hydrated

Her droppings are actually very wet. She is not digesting properly so the poop has recognizable pieces of fruit and veggies in it, swimming in a lot of clear, whitish, greenish or yellowish fluid. Sometimes all she passes is fluid, with no solids.

    keeping chicken hydrated

Oh, good idea, thanks! We've never used one with chickens but we had something similar back when we had pet mice. There is a chance that the people that had ChronoHen before we got her (she was dumped at the local cemetery last summer along with her flock mates) had nipple waterers, and now that...

    keeping chicken hydrated

Oh, I'm totally fine with her drinking from the spigot! And, I do actually make it drip extra. I just worry that it's not enough b/c it seems like such a small amount of water and I read somewhere that a chicken needs to drink about a cup of water a day. Also we can only have her out by the...

    keeping chicken hydrated

I have an older, sick girl, named ChronoHen, who I know is declining... I've posted about her in another thread. Our vet did an exam and an x-ray on her at the beginning of this week and said she had pneumonia, an egg (likely without shell) that she can't pass, and digestive issues including...

starter vs. grower - for older hens

Hi - we're not sure what's causing it. The vet couldn't tell either but suspected an underlying issue, possibly cancer, or simply age-related dysfunction. We don't know how old ChronoHen is but I'd guess maybe around 5. She was dumped at the local cemetery along with her flockmates, and was very...

starter vs. grower - for older hens

Yeah, we'd stick with Scratch & Peck for sure if it wasn't for this one chicken who is apparently no longer able to digest it. It started rotting in her crop and she nearly died. Luckily we have access to a vet who is willing to treat and even operate on chickens. The vet opened up our girl's...

starter vs. grower - for older hens

Thanks for the recommendation! We are about 150 miles and at least one mountain pass from the nearest Tractor Supply so we pretty much have to go with what our local feed store carries. I haven't bought Scratch & Peck Starter in a while as it's been nearly 3 years since I had baby chicks but...

starter vs. grower - for older hens

I spoke with the folks at the feed store on the phone so didn't see the package myself but they told me the brand is Nutrena. So I'm guessing this is what they carry: https://www.nutrenaworld.com/product/nature-smart-chick-starter-grower-feed

starter vs. grower - for older hens

We have a mixed flock with some laying hens, some older, non-laying hens, and a rooster. We also have one hen who has recently started having digestive issues and is no longer able to digest whole grains. We have been feeding Scratch & Peck Grower, which is a whole grain feed with supplements...

skin sore on chicken's belly - what is it and how to treat?

Update: breast blister looks better, smaller and less inflamed. We are continuing with Vetericyn and Neosporin twice/daily. Prefix went broody a few days ago, which is both good because she is less likely to spend time picking at the sore, and bad because it rubs against the nesting material all...

    chicken's crop not working

    Will try that today, thanks!

skin sore on chicken's belly - what is it and how to treat?

Huh, interesting. Our rooster most likely has MG but his symptom is chronic wheezing, which gets worse in very cold or very hot weather. We also have a hen with a chronic sneeze but no other symptoms. I know that MG is highly contagious so if one chicken has it, the others likely have it too. It...

    chicken's crop not working

Thanks, will try adding probiotics to her feed. We added some Save-A-Chick probiotics to her water in the week or two after surgery and she wouldn't drink the water with probiotics, only plain. The pellets actually contain probiotics according to the packaging but perhaps it's not enough or not...

skin sore on chicken's belly - what is it and how to treat?

Got a hold of some used bath towels and will be wrapping roosts soon. For now, we bring Prefix inside for the night and she sleeps on a towel in a crate. Treating the sore morning and evening with Vetericyn followed by Neosporin. Seems like it is maybe getting a little better - or at any rate...

    chicken's crop not working

Update on our girl: She is doing really well on pellet feed! I wanted to try a small bag first, to see how she does, and my feed store only had those 40 lb bags of chicken pellets but they did have a 5 lb bag of duck pellets so that's what I got. The saleslady at the feed store told me that...
