Well it’s been on going for many months. I’m happy to give them a break. I just think I’m doing something wrong or something is off with the birds.
It’s tough to feed 35 birds w/o any egg money 😔
Last June I left town and many of my girls went broody. I left 2 sit on eggs which snowballed into 5 or 6. Hatched out maybe 10, gifted several away. Went through a molt afterwards I believe. Egg production dropped substantially. I had been getting 8-14/day with 15 girls.
Now I’m up to...
Thanks to all who’ve replied. I’m not too worried about the eggs. I’ve already eaten them w/o reservation.
I’m only concerned about the duck and concerned she is normal and this is not a sign of a problem with her ovaries or reproductive bits.
They are as delicious as the rest of them...
So I’ve had some odd shapes, footballs and duck farts. Caulky ones, crusty ones and soft shelled ones. But I’ve only had a few of these with the Dairy Queen top. I’m not overly concerned however I lost my lovely Cayuga who did develop a reproductive problem. I’m somewhat familiar with their...
Definitely add oyster shell in a separate bowl so they maybe eat it when they feel the need. I don’t mix it in their food. They know when they need it. Purina Duck Food might not be the best but it’s reasonably priced and available in most stores. Add brewers yeast regardless. I also use...
They have high temperatures than most animals which is an adaptive way of preventing illness from dirty water and a environment more susceptible to pathogens etc.
I wouldn’t be concerned at all about health ramifications to humans or other pets.
I think ducks while maybe not as “clean” as...
That is absolutely hilarious! Cleary she has taken on a serious personality! I’ve only had one that seemed to take any interest in me. The rest only at feeding time or when they want back on the other side of the electric fence they flew over earlier and now seem to have forgotten about it...
I believe I had possibly overreacted (no!!!) to the change in season with their behavior this spring. I failed to realize it’s been 2 or more years since I’ve had more than 6 in my flock. My trail cam did show a possum scampering about near my fox traps plus I’ve noticed several males...
The hens can drive you stark raving mad! If mine continue to go on at night I’m going to put them in the freezer. Lately I’ve been having a lot of trouble with a hen or two going on all night long buckwheat buckwheat buckwheat buckwheat, followed by a boy or two.
I guess that makes sense...
Watch where they lay, often times they’ll lay in an area where they are susceptible to being eaten by predators. Every year I lose skinny hands because they lay nests outside my electrified area. In the past I’ve had them lay eggs and the same nest as the ducks. My broody saxony duck hatched...
