gathering geese in for the night

We struggled with this too. Best idea ever? A funnel. Set up their house in a corner of the pen, and set up some fencing that's easy to herd them into. Like a chute that leads to their door. It makes it easier for you, and less stressful for them because there's nowhere else to go!

When to trim or not to trim wings

My pilgrims can fly. Not up and over the house or anything, but up and over their four foot fence. My favorite female is named Delta due to her tendency to soar like an airliner through the yard.

I just had one like that! It was at day 34, and I stopped seeing movement but there was still a clear patch in the egg so I assumed it was dead. I opened it, and the membrane was bleeding red blood, so obviously was recently alive. The head and upper neck was bulging out brain/spinal cord. I...

My blue slate turkeys suck at math

Well I posted pics. Described them. Pics of parents. Have already gotten three people who said they want some, but they don't respond when I try to set up a time. That makes me so mad. Then another guy set up a time, I waited for him, and then he texts me that he doesn't feel like driving on a...

My blue slate turkeys suck at math

So I have a trio of blue slates. Hatched out a clutch of eggs, expecting 50% slate, 25% self blue, and 25% black. Got 11 live poults. 3 slate, 2 self blue, and 6 black. They have failed their statistics class. (The two that made it to lockdown but didn't hatch? Black lol) (To avoid lectures...

    What should I hatch?

I will be breeding welsummers later when I can get pens set up. And Ameraucanas, and maybe some F2 olive eggers. Right now I can give the broodys welsummer eggs, but they may have been fertilized by any of five different breed roosters. I'm not sure anyone wants a welsummer x spitzhauben or...

    What should I hatch?

Oh great. Now another girl wants to set. Must be contagious. One of my turkeys just started laying, but I don't think I'll have enough of a clutch ready in time, considering their longer incubation. Now I'm thinking of just ordering some day old pullet chicks for them to brood, then sell them as...

    What should I hatch?

It could. Or they could've been bred by the welsummer, and be more olive. My problem is that she's broody now, and I need to give her eggs (or start incubating) this week. No time to set up breeding pens. I would personally be interested in hatching the hamburgs and spitzhaubens, might get some...

    What should I hatch?

And just in case it looks like I have eight hens and five roos, I don't lol. There are 19 girls, and soon to be 3 or 4 Roos.

    What should I hatch?

So I have a hen who's gone broody. I was going to hatch chicks this year, but not yet, so my breeds are still mixed up in one big flock. I'm going to give her something to hatch, but I need it to be something I can sell easily because my breeding goals do not include mystery mutts. Hens...

    Turkey egg ID

Is there a sure fire way to tell turkey eggs from chicken eggs? I have two turkey hens that live in the chicken coop. I also have white and cream layer pullets. I know turkey eggs are pointy and speckled. Can I tell one from a pointy chicken egg that might be a little dirty?

when do turkey hens start to lay?

I just got an egg from my blue slates! They are 20 weeks exactly. Wasnt expecting anything until spring, but they do sleep in the chicken coop, and I'm increasing their artificial light period, so that may have triggered it. I have them up to 12 hours of light at this point, slowly working up to...

    Amusing anatomical abnormalities

And alliteration too! Anyone found strange body parts or lack thereof in your butchering adventures? My latest was a duck who lacked a tail. Now he was always an "odd duck," he was crested, and ran in circles when stressed, but his body always looked shorter than his noncrested Ancona hatch...

Does metzer sell quality pilgrim geese?

My Metzer pilgrims are almost eight weeks old, and absolutely enormous! And gorgeous. I'm assuming the females will get the white on their faces with their next molt?

    Welsummer

The Welsummers I've had have been pretty small, maybe five pound mature hens. I doubt the cockerels would have much meat on them before getting tough and rooster-tasting. They are a "fancy/rare" breed that lay dark brown speckled eggs, so people will pay pretty well for pullets. If I were you, I...
