Review by 'Nurs4kids' in article 'Using Sand In Your Chicken Coop'

I'd be curious to see an update from the writer. We tried sand and found it too dry; did not like it at all. We accidentally stumbled upon something that's worked perfectly for us-river rock/pebbles. We initially used them to cover fencing we had laid on the floor to prevent predators, but it...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

Thank you, Isaac. I assumed niacin is like most medications which is why I opted to go ahead with SQ over oral. They are doing MUCH better today, and I honestly was afraid they were too far gone to correct. I opted SQ over IM to keep from having to torture them to get to the breast muscle...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

I've read most of this thread, and if I missed this I apologize. I have four ducks about 8 weeks old. Two of them are pekin. Early on, one of them showed signs of niacin deficiency, so we added in brewers yeast and it quickly improved. I've noticed she has never walked the same as the...

Luker's Cluckers My sister started raising chickens about four months ago. At first, I was a little humored, but as she continued posting pics and updates on facebook, I was slowly drawn into the world of chickens. As Mother's Day approached, my husband asked what I wanted and was amused...

Cracked corn as the only feed

A friend gave me four hens to get me started. She said she only fed them cracked corn, so that's what I started with. I was getting two eggs a day. After researching here and talking with other chicken folks, I decided to switch them to high protein and only supplement with cracked corn...

How long do cracked eggs last?

I just realized WHY my eggs are cracking--refrigerator too cold. Now I wonder how long those cracked eggs are safe to eat? The inner membrane appears intact, BUT I did NOT wash them prior to refrigeration.

Hens laying eggs in wrong place

Golf balls in the nest will do the trick. Had same problem last week and three golf balls later, my problem was fixed within 24 hours.

    Hardware cloth and staples

Quote: Something I've wondered for a while: Is there a difference in galvanized materials? Well, I KNOW there is, but don't know the difference. We built a pool deck back in 2000 and we used ALL galvanized screws. We ended up using two 25# buckets. HALF of our screws have now rusted to...

    Hardware cloth and staples

Shoulda, coulda, wish I woulda... Listen to these guys. We just built ours and used the little fence staples. They were a royal PIA to hammer in and I kept thinking we needed something longer/stronger. Lowe's has these for $14.66 for a 5# box. We did sandwich the fence between boards in...
