The float test for hatching is where you will look for movement. It’s not really looking for the egg to float or sink. The water just makes it easier to observe movement that you wouldn’t necessarily notice by looking at the egg. But I do agree with the other poster that your egg is most likely...
Hello! Congratulations on your decision to be a chicken owner, or a chicken “tender”! 😆 It’s so much fun!
If you are wanting chickens that are close to laying then I don’t think you will find anyone to ship them. For the most part only baby chicks or very young “started” birds will ship through...
They look like males to me. But their coloring is throwing me off. The male Favs have black feathers on their chest while the female has white to brown chest feathers. Your’s has black and brown chest feathers. But comb is bright red so I’m leaning toward male.
The pictures I added were of mine...
Pretty sure that’s a male, but I don’t know from that one picture if it’s 100% Salmon Faverolles… maybe a mixed breed…
More pictures would help though.
I do think they are more of a skittish breed. You have to kind of announce your presence before putting your hand down or they freak out, more than most I noticed. But I had 2 that would jump into my hand when I would put it down, one female and one male. When I go out to the coop they all come...
I absolutely adore my Salmon Faverolles! 🥰
My first ones hatched Christmas day and my second on New Year’s Day.
They are the sweetest, silliest cutest chickens ever!! ♥️♥️♥️
I also love the fact that you can tell male from female by week 3ish.
Maybe a fox… they just snatch em up and go bury the catch until they are ready to eat it. They will keep coming back until they get all or until it gets too hard or risky to get the last few.
Sorry, 😞 unfortunately I’m speaking from experience last spring. I caught it on camera.
I have 4...
While doing a spring coop cleanup I discovered some of my girls have mites. I want to treat all 3 of my coops but one of them has 4 broody silkies in it. They are on day 12-14. With it hurt the developing embryos if I spray down the coop, nest boxes and mamas? I planned to move the girls to some...
So
Rats. Sorry this happened to you.
I had 5 silkie chicks disappear overnight last summer and I couldn’t make sense of it. I put a camera in the coop and saw 2 huge rats coming in and out and going straight to the nest box where the babies were. The hole was smaller than a quarter.
I have had bad luck here lately because our mail system is being “updated “ so all eggs have been extra shook up! Maybe just wait until day 7 to candle. That way you can be sure if you don’t see anything.
I personally never discard an egg until day 10. I have had eggs I candled at day 7...
I frequently hatch shipped eggs and detached air cells are very common.
I too do the dry hatch method. I have humidity around 30% and then lock down to 45-50%.
I don’t turn my eggs for the first 4 days and keep them in the egg carton like you have, and then after depending on how detached they...
