Hello all- I’m pretty new to chicken keeping. We got this Green Queen from Meyer Hatchery, labeled a pullet- she’s 11 weeks old, and now I’m suspecting she is actually a cockerel. She already receives special care because she has an crossbeak, so rehoming would be next to impossible. (We can’t have roos where I live.) Any help is much appreciated!

Sorry but it’s a cockerel. It has male specific coloring.
Good luck 😕

I sincerely appreciate the quick answers. Looks like my suspicions are being confirmed. I’m super bummed, because we are maxed out at 8 chickens, and can’t have cockerels here. Of course this has to be my favorite one. From what I’m reading, it seems like this is a pretty common occurrence in this breed.

Side note- in the very off chance that we are able to keep him, should I assume it’s not a good idea to hatch any fertilized eggs since he has the crossbeak? It seems to be a genetic trait for the Green Queens.

Thanks again!

I wouldn’t hatch eggs that were fertilized by him. You wouldn’t want to risk the defect being passed down. And it’s always the favorite ones that break our hearts. The thing that’s crazy is that as baby chicks the sweetest little ones that you really bond with and love turn out to be the boys.
