Newly Hatched and Integrating new (purchased) chicks to my flock

Got Mama and Peep moved over and introduced to the flock. So far she's kicked everyone's butt at least once (including the rooster lol) and I'm not so worried that she won't be able to protect baby. I am a little worried that she's not letting them in to the coop to lay but I trust they'll...

I'm hoping he'll help Her! He's the only rooster we have right now (to early to tell the sex of the new baby!) So it's just the hens I'm worried about. I'm going to trust momma to protect her little one!

This is what I was thinking too, Momma puffs up and "growls" at us if we even open the nesting box to peek in at her so I'm sure she'll protect from the other hens and (hopefully) the jerk of a rooster! lol I think we'll move them over this weekend while we're around to kind of keep an eye on...

Newly Hatched and Integrating new (purchased) chicks to my flock

We're in Oklahoma, for the next week the coolest it's supposed to get is 62. We don't have heat on them right now because the highs during the day are in the 80s - 90s and they're in the garage so it stays warm even over night. The coop is well built (we built it ourselves) and will protect...

    Hello From Oklahoma!

Ours got up pretty much only for food and water. She was in the same coop with the flock just in an area that we fenced off with chicken wire so they couldn't get to each other.

    Hello From Oklahoma!

Hi! We"re in Wanette which is SW of Shawnee and NE of Purcell (and if you blink you'll miss it! lol) Did you separate your broody from the rest of the flock? We did this time but I think we'll leave the next broody with full access to the flock and see what happens.

That was my thought as well, Momma is super protective so I think she'll keep baby safe but the RIRs would be on their own so I want them to be bigger before having interaction with the flock....especially the rooster who is a jerk with an attitude problem!!

Momma and baby are in that area now but if it's safe for them to be with the flock I can move them over.

They're getting very antsy!! We have the coop divided already, should we wait two weeks and then put them in the coop separate from the flock for a few days?

    Hello From Oklahoma!

Hi everyone! My name is Carol and I started my backyard flock a little over a year ago (I've been a lurker for awhile!). I've currently got 6 hens (5 black sex links and 1 buff cochin) and 1 buff cochin rooster who's a bit of a jerk (ok, he's a BIG jerk but he's my big jerk! lol) And we've...

Newly Hatched and Integrating new (purchased) chicks to my flock

We recently had our first broody hen! On advise from a friend we separated her from the flock while she sat on her egg (they could still see each other but couldn't interact) because she was chasing the other hens out of the nesting boxes. She hatched her chick a couple days ago! While she was...
