I got turned at an early age. I used to show goats at the livestock show and one year my grandfather fed me my own goat to prove a point. So now I don't even flinch when thinking about those kind of things. It will happen to most of our chickens eventually. They will go from egg layers to dinner.

I don't know anything about Lancaster, PA, but down here in Texas some cities require that you get a permit to have chickens or there are specific requirements of where the coop must be. Did they state why your in violation?
It sounds like your dog is very loving and probably safe to keep the chicks around him. However, dogs can get coccidiosis from bird droppings from wild birds, so there is always the chance that the dog could transmit it to the chickens.
