Hi,

We have three old hens (6 years old) and recently moved to Lancaster, PA. We read over the township website and did not see a reason why they could not make the move with us so we did so and yesterday received a letter saying that we are in violation. Does anyone have any advice, suggestions, know anyone that is going through this in the Lancaster area? It's very upsetting to us.

I don't know anything about Lancaster, PA, but down here in Texas some cities require that you get a permit to have chickens or there are specific requirements of where the coop must be. Did they state why your in violation?

Gerri, welcome to BYC. Go to the "Raising Backyard Chickens" forum, click on 'Local Chicken Laws and Ordinances --------'. Good luck.

Each township and even some neighborhoods have their own ordinances.
Poultry is often considered livestock and not permitted in residential zoned areas.
Some townships allow them, some don't.

They should have cited the specific ordinance you are in violation of in the notice. V look up their ordinances on the web.
