    Hen had her butt plucked.

We were away for about a month and upon our return we found that our Jersey Giant hen Olive had quite a few feathers missing from her rump. Is there a salve that is recommended to help assuage the redness, and dissuade other chickens from packing at her? This is a new behavior that we think was...

    Shrieking Australorp

We have a flock of 5 now, 2 old Buff Orpington hens (retired from laying) and 3 newer pullets ( Copper Marans, Jersey Giant, and another Buff Orpington) of which 2 have just begun laying. Our coop has an automatic chicken door, and the birds are up before the door opens. They expect their...

    Chicken coop upgrade.

Our two Buff Orpingtons, Henrietta and Pumpkin, are getting along in years so we decided that we will add two more Silver-laced Wyandottes to the flock. This gave us an opportunity to upgrade our also aging coop, and add an automatic chicken door. I bought the basic coop and door from Amazon...

How many people have buff Orpingtons

We have 3. Henrietta is a grumpy one, always growling, but Pumpkin and Penny are sweet, curious birds who like to sit on your lap. All three are consistent egg layers. Here my son is giving them a snack.

    My chickens are beggars!

Our chickens are a little more forward than just begging. They will fly up on your lap to check out what they might pilfer. Odious hens! Begone! Well, people who visit think it is cute.

    Easter Eggers or Buff Orpingtons?

I'm a little late to this thread, but thought I would give my two cents worth. My wife and I had intended on Speckled Sussex as well, but just like you were unable to find a source for pullets. We went with three Buff Orpingtons. Our experience has only been positive. The personality of the...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Thanks, Ballerinas we have plenty of lavender and rosemary to make the nesting box sweet smelling. I will move to pine shavings and add sprigs of herbs. No point in taking unnecessary risks.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

I did not know any better. If they prove to be problematic I will switch to pine. Only the nesting box has cedar shavings, which we bought at the farm supply on the advice of one of the workers. Otherwise, everything else is construction sand. Except for the protracted squawking by all three...

Pumpkin's first egg: Apparently there was a heck of a lot of squaking for such a small egg!

    Confusion about gender

I bought 3 Buff Orpingtons at about 15 weeks of age a month ago, so they are about 19 weeks old. I was assured they were hens, but recently in the last two weeks I have seen the rapid development of combs and wattles on 2 of my birds, as well as what I perceive to be saddle feathers. I am a...

Buff Orpington, Male or Female? (pic heavy)

I have a question about my own 3 Buff Orpingtons that were bought as hens at about 15 weeks of age. They all looked alike when purchased, but now, a month later, I am having suspicions that 2 of them might be roosters as their wattles and combs hav become quite pronounced, and they look like...

    Decided on Buff Orpingtons

Hello all! I have been busy getting my chicken digs ready. I had been planning on getting a few Speckled Sussex, but have not been able to locally find pullets. I found a fellow on Craigslist who sells Buff Orpingtons out in El Cajon; I talked with him and he seems on the up-and-up so this...
